The Polarity of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Traffic, 2001The diversity of epithelia in the body permits a multitude of organ‐specific functions. One of the foremost examples of this is the retinal pigment epithelium. Located between the photoreceptors of the retina and their principal blood supply, the choriocapillaris, the retinal pigment epithelium is critical for the survival and function of retinal ...

Pigmented Lesions of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Optometry and Vision Science, 2015: The primary eye care practitioner assumes an important role in clinical decisions involving the differentiation between malignant and nonmalignant pigmented lesions. A misdiagnosis may have profound consequences on patient management and visual or life prognosis.

Microrips of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1992We describe six patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration who had retinal pigment epithelial detachments with associated overlying neurosensory detachments. During fluorescein angiography, each patient demonstrated a solitary, intense, central serouslike leak at the edge of the retinal pigment epithelial detachment with passage of ...

Renaissance of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1972THE APPLICATION of recent advances in laboratory methods to the study of individual intraocular structures has greatly enhanced our ability to evaluate their function in health and disease. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the investigation of the retinal pigment epithelium where the utilization of light and electron microscopy coupled with ...

Adenocarcinoma of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1978A 57-year-old woman complaining of decreased vision for six months had a mass expanding the choroid inferonasally in the right eye. Clinical examination, ultrasonography, and fluorescein angiography were consistent with a malignant melanoma. The eye was enucleated and pathologic studies showed an adenocarcinoma of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE ...

The Retinal Pigment Epithelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1982The Retinal Pigmented Epithelium edited by Zinn and Marmor is well organized, clearly written, and beautifully illustrated. This scholarly work contains 26 chapters written by distinguished scientists and clinicians. Many have devoted a substantial portion of their careers to the study of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE).

Retinal Pigment Epithelium and Endothelium
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1986To the Editor. —The recent reports on the interactions between retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and endothelium in vitro point out that an RPElocated inhibitor of neovascularization and an endothelium-located chemoattractant for RPE cells explain only part of the story of how neovascularization and the status quo at Bruch's membrane are controlled.1 ...

Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) arises from neuroectoderm and plays a key role in support of photoreceptor functions. Several degenerative eye diseases, such as macular degeneration or retinitis pigmentosa, are associated with impaired RPE function that may lead to photoreceptor loss and blindness. RPE derived from human embryonic stem (hES) cells can

The Retinal Pigment Epithelium
2005Abstract The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is a monolayer of cuboidal epithelial cells intercalated between the photoreceptors and the choriocapillaries. The human RPE incorporates some 3.5 million epithelial cells arranged in a regular hexagonal pattern.

Lipofuscin of Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1980Analysis of the fluorescent spectra of chloroform-methanol extracts of human retinal pigment epithelium confirmed the presence of lipofuscin pigments in the pigment epithelium of older individuals. Similar fractions in the pigment epithelium of young individuals were present in insufficient quantities for spectral analysis.
