OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY ANGIOGRAPHY IMAGING OF A CONGENITAL SIMPLE HAMARTOMA OF THE RETINAL PIGMENT EPITHELIUM

open access: yes, 2021
To report the case of a small pigmented tumor in the macular region investigated using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in the context of a multimodal approach. Case report. A 24-year-old man was referred for evaluation of an asymptomatic

Beyond the Classics: The Synergy of AI and Genomics Reveals an Expanded Repertoire of Pigmentation Genes

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Zoology Part B: Molecular and Developmental Evolution, EarlyView.
Classical approaches for coloration analysis are limited by human low‐resolution phenotyping and genetic analysis. Artificial intelligence allows us to find genes beyond the tip of the iceberg that explain color and pattern diversity in nature. ABSTRACT Pigmentation has long served as a powerful system for exploring gene–trait relationships, yet much ...

Preclinical Evaluation of a Cell-Based Gene Therapy Using the Sleeping Beauty Transposon System in Choroidal Neovascularization

open access: yesMolecular Therapy: Methods & Clinical Development, 2019
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive retinal disorder characterized by imbalanced pro- and antiangiogenic signals. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of ex vivo cell-based gene therapy with stable expression of human ...

Candidate gene study of macular response to supplemental lutein and zeaxanthin. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Supplementation with carotenoids is proposed to protect against age-related macular degeneration. There is, however, considerable variability in retinal macular pigment response, which may be due to underlying genetic variation. The purpose of this study

Beyond Skin and Eyes: The Medical and Social Burden of Oculocutaneous Albinism in Africa: A Narrative Review

open access: yesJEADV Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) is a genetic disorder found worldwide, but its impact is particularly pronounced in the African continent. This results from both a higher prevalence and the persistent myths and superstitions surrounding the condition in many African communities.

Glycemic Control, Animal Protein Intake, and the Risk of Diabetic Retinopathy Progression Among Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesThe Kaohsiung Journal of Medical Sciences, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Effective glycemic control and food consumption play crucial roles in modulating diabetic retinopathy (DR) progression. This observational longitudinal study explored the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and dietary patterns and their associations with the risk and progression of DR among 369 individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Ex Vivo Evaluation of Poly(Solketal Acrylate) Nanoparticles for Intravitreal Drug Delivery to the Posterior Eye Segment

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
Nile Red‐loaded poly(solketal acrylate) nanoparticles enable fluorescence tracking and exhibit nontoxic profiles in retinal cells. Enhanced cellular uptake and deep retinal penetration after intravitreal injection highlight their excellent potential for targeted ocular drug delivery to the posterior segment of the eye.

Optical coherence tomography and fundus autofluorescence findings in presumed congenital simple retinal pigment epithelium hamartoma

open access: yes, 2017
Aim: Presumed congenital simple retinal pigment epithelium hamartoma is a rare benign lesion of the macula that mimics congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and combined hamartoma of the retina and the RPE; newer imaging ...

Homogenous Cell Transplantation Trials in Parkinson's Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesMovement Disorders Clinical Practice, EarlyView.
Abstract Background The transplantation of homogenous cells has emerged as an investigational strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD), offering an alternative to symptomatic treatment. Objective We performed a systematic review and meta‐analysis to assess its clinical efficacy and safety.
