Evaluation of Nonperfused Retinal Vessels in Ischemic Retinopathy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Purpose: Retinal ischemia has been traditionally assessed by fluorescein angiography, visualizing perfused vessels. However, this method does not provide any information about nonperfused vessels, and although it is often assumed that vessels in ischemic

Multifractal analysis of human retinal vessels [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, 2006
In this work it is shown that vascular structures of the human retina represent geometrical multifractals, characterized by a hierarchy of exponents rather then a single fractal dimension. A number of retinal images from the STARE database (www.parl.clemson.edu/stare) are analyzed, corresponding to both normal and pathological states of the retina.

Organoids in pediatric cancer research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Organoid technology has revolutionized cancer research, yet its application in pediatric oncology remains limited. Recent advances have enabled the development of pediatric tumor organoids, offering new insights into disease biology, treatment response, and interactions with the tumor microenvironment.

Establishing death in stranded Odontocetes (toothed whales) using other mammals : a pilot study : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Zoology at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The aim of this study was to investigate and evaluate a new method for determining death in stranded odontocetes (toothed whales). The new method was using the pulsations seen in the retinal blood vessels in the place of the heart rate. The retinal blood

Pericyte-mediated regulation of capillary diameter: a component of neurovascular coupling in health and disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Because regional blood flow increases in association with the increased metabolic demand generated by localised increases in neural activity, functional imaging researchers often assume that changes in blood flow are an accurate read-out of changes in ...

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

In vivo volumetric imaging of human retinal circulation with phase-variance optical coherence tomography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present in vivo volumetric images of human retinal micro-circulation using Fourier-domain optical coherence tomography (Fd-OCT) with the phase-variance based motion contrast method.

Late clinical characteristics of infants with retinopathy of prematurity and treated with cryotherapy [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ophthalmology, 2016
AIM: To describe the clinical characteristics and late results of patients with retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) treated with “6h cryotherapy”. METHODS: Out of 1252 infants screened for ROP, 52 patients were treated with temporal 6h cryotherapy from ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Retinal micro-vascular and aortic macro-vascular changes in postmenopausal women with primary hyperparathyroidism [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Aim of the study was to evaluate the micro and macro-vascular changes in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) compared to controls. 30 postmenopausal PHPT women (15 hypertensive and 15 normotensive) and 30 normotensive controls underwent ...
