Metabolic interactions between vitamin A and conjugated linoleic acid [PDF]
Lipid-soluble molecules share several aspects of their physiology due to their common adaptations to a hydrophilic environment, and may interact to regulate their action in a tissue-specific manner.

The Retinol Circulating Complex Releases Hormonal Ligands During Acute Stress Disorders
Intensive care workers actively participate in very hot debates aiming at defining the true metabolic, hormonal and nutritional requirements of critically ill patients, the contributory roles played by thyroid and retinoid ligands being largely ...

Hydrophobic Ligand Binding by Zn-α_2-glycoprotein, a Soluble Fat-depleting Factor Related to Major Histocompatibility Complex Proteins [PDF]
Zn-alpha2-glycoprotein (ZAG) is a member of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I family of proteins and is identical in amino acid sequence to a tumor-derived lipid-mobilizing factor associated with cachexia in cancer patients.

Liver takes up retinol-binding protein from plasma.
Retinol is transported in plasma bound to a specific transport protein, retinol-binding protein. We prepared 125I-tyramine cellobiose-labeled rat retinol-binding protein and studied its tissue uptake 1, 5, and 24 h after intravenous injection into rats. The liver was the organ containing most radioactivity at all time points studied.

Protein polymorphism of a human plasma apolipoprotein D antigenic epitope.
Based on our previous observation that monoclonal antibody anti-apoD-4E11 reacted with several HDL proteins we studied them further with three questions in mind: i) is there common protein polymorphism in healthy individuals?

Vitamin A Status of Women and Children in Yaoundé and Douala, Cameroon, is Unchanged One Year after Initiation of a National Vitamin A Oil Fortification Program. [PDF]
Vitamin A (VA) fortification of cooking oil is considered a cost-effective strategy for increasing VA status, but few large-scale programs have been evaluated. We conducted representative surveys in Yaoundé and Douala, Cameroon, 2 years before and 1 year

Ultrastructural localization of plasma retinol-binding protein in rat liver
Immunocytochemical studies were carried out to examine the subcellular localization of plasma retinol-binding protein (RBP) in rat liver. The studies used normal, retinol-deficient, and retinol-repleted retinol-deficient rats with or without colchicine pretreatment. Affinity-purified monomeric Fab' fragments from the IgG fraction of rabbit anti-rat RBP

Proteomic analysis of plasma from children with sickle cell anemia and silent cerebral infarction
Silent cerebral infarction is the most common neurological abnormality in children with sickle cell anemia, affecting 30-40% of 14 year olds. There are no known biomarkers to identify children with silent cerebral infarcts, and the pathological basis is ...

Maternal plasma retinol binding protein 4 in acute pyelonephritis during pregnancy [PDF]
Adipokines have been implicated in metabolic regulation and the immune response thus providing a molecular mechanism for the interaction between these two systems. Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP4) is a novel adipokine that plays a role in the pathophysiology of obesity-induced insulin resistance, as well as in the modulation of inflammation. The aim of
