Clustering reveals cavitation-related acoustic emission signals from dehydrating branches [PDF]
The formation of air emboli in the xylem during drought is one of the key processes leading to plant mortality due to loss in hydraulic conductivity, and strongly fuels the interest in quantifying vulnerability to cavitation. The acoustic emission (AE) technique can be used to measure hydraulic conductivity losses and construct vulnerability curves ...

Spectroscopy of Infrared Flares from the Microquasar GRS 1915+105 [PDF]
We present near-infrared medium-resolution ($R \sim 875$) spectra of the microquasar GRS 1915+105 on 1997 August 13-15 UTC from the Hale 200-inch telescope. The spectra showed broad emission lines of He I (2.058 $\mu$m) and H I (2.166 $\mu$m - Br$\gamma$)

In addition to the standard 447 nm blue emission from the InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells, a high-energy shoulder is clearly observed in cathodoluminescence spectra of the high-efficiency InGaN/GaN blue light emitting diodes grown on sapphire substrates

Spin-current emission governed by nonlinear spin dynamics
Coupling between conduction electrons and localized magnetization is responsible for a variety of phenomena in spintronic devices. This coupling enables to generate spin currents from dynamical magnetization.

Airborne observations reveal elevational gradient in tropical forest isoprene emissions [PDF]
AbstractIsoprene dominates global non-methane volatile organic compound emissions, and impacts tropospheric chemistry by influencing oxidants and aerosols. Isoprene emission rates vary over several orders of magnitude for different plants, and characterizing this immense biological chemodiversity is a challenge for estimating isoprene emission from ...

Probing the Pulsar Wind Nebula of PSR B0355+54 [PDF]
We present XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observations of the middle-aged radio pulsar PSR B0355+54. Our X-ray observations reveal emission not only from the pulsar itself, but also from a compact diffuse component extending ~50'' in the opposite direction

Gallstone Magnesium Distributions from Optical Emission Spectroscopy
This work reports measurements of calcified gallstone elemental compositions using laser-induced optical emission spectroscopy. The experimental results support the importance of the magnesium concentration in gallstone growth.

Ultrasonic emissions reveal individual cavitation bubbles in water-stressed wood [PDF]
Under drought conditions, the xylem of trees that conducts ascending sap produces ultrasonic emissions whose exact origin is not clear. We introduce a new method to record simultaneously both acoustic events and optical observation of the xylem conduits within slices of wood that were embedded in a transparent material setting a hydric stress.
