Zeitschrift f�r Vergleichende Physiologie, 1969Betrachtet man mit einem Mikroskop mittlerer Apertur eine Bildebene im Komplexauge, so kann man bei antidromer Beleuchtung bei Calliphora erythrocephala am intakten Auge innerhalb eines groseren Bereichs gleichzeitig die Rhabdomere eines jeden Ommatidiums deutlich in Form eines virtuellen, aufrechten und vergroserten Bildes sehen.

The paracrystalline structure of an insect rhabdomere (Calliphora erythrocephala)
Cell and Tissue Research, 1987By use of a modified fixation technique, the receptor cells of the compound eye of the blowfly Calliphora erythrocephala were found to contain a regular, paracrystalline array of alternating rows of hexagonally shaped microvilli. The receptor cells R1 to R6 have a cell-specific number of microvilli per row in a cross section.

A labile, Ca2+-dependent cytoskeleton in rhabdomeral microvilli of blowflies
Cell and Tissue Research, 1982Rhabdomeral microvilli of photoreceptors of the blowfly Lucilia are shown to contain a cytoskeleton. An axial filament (∼ 6–11 nm) in each microvillus is inserted into a terminal cap distally, and into a plug filling the narrow neck of the microvillus proximally.

Rhabdomeric Ocellus in a Chiton
Nature, 1969IT has long been known that certain chitons (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) possess eyes or ocelli1. These ocelli occupy a unique position, being set dorsally in the outer most layer of the shell. No eyes from the soft parts of adult animals have yet been described2. Light microscope investigations distinguished several types of organelles within the shell.

A, 1978The population of the centrally located rhabdomeres no. 7 in the ommatidia of flies (Musca, Calliphora, Drosophila) is inhomogeneous: approximately 2/3 of them contain — besides a photoisomerizable rhodopsin — a photostable pigment. Its extinction spectrum has a maximum at 460 nm and two shoulders at 430 and 485 nm respectively.
