Heat exchange rates between adult sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) and the environment

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Body temperatures of salmon do not always match the temperatures of their immediate environment. We investigated the relationship between varying ambient water temperatures and body temperatures of adult sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka using Newton's law of cooling and non‐linear mixed models.

Love bites? Pre-copulatory behaviours of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Very little is known about the reproductive behaviours of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus). Here, we describe field observations of courtship behaviour by a whale shark at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia.

Marine Parasite Biogeography Mirrors Host Patterns Across Latitude, Area, and Diversity

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Zoology, Volume 53, Issue 2, June 2026.
Parasites are integral components of biodiversity, yet they remain poorly represented in large‐scale biogeographic theory. In this study, we test whether marine parasites follow three macroecological patterns established for free‐living taxa, namely that parasite species richness: (1) scales positively with area (both host body size and geographic area)

Armored eyes of the whale shark.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
This report elaborates on adaptations of the eyes of the whale shark Rhincodon typus (Elasmobranchii, Rhincodontidae), including the discovery that they are covered with dermal denticles, which is a novel mechanism of eye protection in vertebrates.

Long-Term Photo-Identification Reveals the Population Dynamics and Strong Site Fidelity of Adult Whale Sharks to the Coastal Waters of Donsol, Philippines

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2018
Donsol in the Philippines is the longest running community-based whale shark (Rhincodon typus) ecotourism site in Southeast Asia, with peak visitation in 2012 of over 27,000 tourists. In order to understand this aggregation and the importance of the area

First Insights Into the Horizontal Movements of Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) in the Northern Arabian Sea

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2021
Whale sharks off the western coast of India have suffered high levels of fishing pressure in the past, and today continue to be caught in small-scale fisheries as by-catch.

Hiding in Plain Sight: Evidence of Echeneidae Cloacal and Gill Diving Behavior in Manta Ray Hosts

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 5, May 2026.
Here we document seven observations of Echeneidae cloacal diving behavior in manta rays and one observation of gill attachment behavior. These observations span all three currently described species of manta rays (Mobula yarae, Mobula birostris, and Mobula alfredi), demonstrate the ability of large Echeneidae to perform cloacal diving behavior in both ...

High resolution data reveal fundamental steps and turns in animal movements

open access: yesEcological Monographs, Volume 96, Issue 2, May 2026.
Abstract Animal movement paths display substantial complexity and variability, promoting efforts to identify universal rules and models that best describe them. Using high‐resolution (≥10 Hz) movement from 43 vertebrate species spanning diverse taxa, body sizes, and lifestyles, we show that paths are universally composed of straight‐line steps ...

Whale Sharks Do It Deeper: Extension of Known Depth Range for Rhincodon typus from Satellite Telemetry Data in the Coral Sea, Australia

open access: yesHydrobiology
Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) predominantly inhabit the epipelagic layer, yet dives to at least 1928 m have been reported. Even so, current understanding of the species’ true maximum dive depth is constrained by the technological limitations of depth ...
