Annual Bands in Vertebrae Validated by Bomb Radiocarbon Assays Provide Estimates of Age and Growth of Whale Sharks

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Conservation and management strategies for endangered and threatened species require accurate estimates of demographic parameters such as age and growth.

Tracking Fin‐Prints on Reef Flats: A Genus‐Specific eDNA Metabarcoding Assay for Epaulette Sharks (Hemiscyllium spp.) With Field Validation in Raja Ampat

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 8, Issue 3, May–June 2026.
This study developed and validated the first genus‐specific eDNA assay for epaulette sharks (Hemiscyllium spp.), targeting the NADH4 gene. Field application in Raja Ampat detected H. freycineti at six of seven locations, including one location (Dayan) where daytime visual surveys failed, demonstrating this tool's value for monitoring protected species.

Stable Isotope Analysis of Two Filter-Feeding Sharks in the Northwestern Pacific Ocean

open access: yesFishes
Understanding the feeding ecology and habitat use of vulnerable shark species is crucial for effective conservation. This study focuses on two large filter-feeding sharks, the megamouth shark (Megachasma pelagios) and whale shark (Rhincodon typus), in ...

Bioimaging of sense organs and the central nervous system in extant fishes and reptiles in situ: A review

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 4, Page 826-852, April 2026.
Bioimaging of the sense organs and brain of fishes and reptiles. Left panel: 3D reconstruction of the head and brain of the deep‐sea viperfish Chauliodus sloani following diceCT. Right panel: A 3D reconstruction of a 70‐day‐old embryo head of the bearded dragon Pogona vitticeps following diceCT, showing the position of the segmented brain within the ...

Using biotelemetry to assess drone effects on whale sharks

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract The use of unoccupied aerial vehicles or drones for wildlife research has proliferated in recent years and they have proven to be a valuable tool for collecting data for population surveys, morphometric and body condition measurements, and for observing behavior.

No Place Like Home? High Residency and Predictable Seasonal Movement of Whale Sharks Off Tanzania

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2020
Highly mobile marine megafauna species, while widely distributed and frequently threatened, often aggregate in distinct localized habitats. Implementation of local management initiatives within these hotspots is more achievable than developing effective ...

Challenges of Monitoring Endangered Bryde's Whales During a Period of Rapid Environmental Change

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, Volume 29, Issue 2, Page 183-193, April 2026.
Estimating population size is challenging for rare and elusive species that occur at low densities and are difficult to detect during sampling. We estimated the abundance of a Nationally critical whale species—Aotearoa New Zealand Bryde's whales—using a custom‐formulated POPAN model which incorporated transience to account for their complex residency ...

Estimating Whale Shark, Rhincodon typus, Length Using Multi-Stereo-Image Measurement

open access: yesFishes
The whale shark Rhincodon typus is the largest known extant omnivorous fish species, reaching up to 17 m in length. Because of its slow growth and late maturity, R.

No Model Fits All: Dynamic Ensemble Species Distribution Model Reveals Seasonal Patterns of Essential Habitat Use by Ocean Giants in the Southwest Pacific

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 32, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Aim Essential habitats are areas that support biological and ecological functions critical for species' survival. For highly mobile and elusive marine species, aggregations in these habitats provide rare opportunities to study their ecology and inform conservation.

Sightings of whale sharks ( Rhincodon typus) off Angola and Nigeria

open access: yesMarine Biodiversity Records, 2010
Knowledge of the whale shark, Rhincodon typus, in the south-east Atlantic off the coast of West Africa is limited to several bycatch and stranding records. Ten at-sea sightings of whale sharks from Angola (N = 9) and Nigeria (N = 1) are presented, consisting of nine sightings from offshore platforms and a single record from a helicopter.
