Deadly Decomposers: Distinguishing Life History Strategies on the Parasitism‐Saprotrophy Spectrum

open access: yesEcology Letters, Volume 28, Issue 6, June 2025.
Despite being widespread, common, and important to medicine and agriculture, parasitic decomposers are poorly understood. Drawing on literature spanning bacteria to animals, we show that these deadly decomposers follow similar life history strategies regardless of taxon. We define four such strategies, providing diverse biological examples and deriving

Targeting the hard to reach: Challenges and novel strategies in the treatment of intracellular bacterial infections: Targeting intracellular bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Infectious diseases continue to threaten human and animal health and welfare globally, impacting millions of lives and causing substantial economic loss. The use of antibacterials has been only partially successful in reducing disease impact.

Equine Blood Microbiome in a Cohort of Clinically Healthy Trail Riding Horses

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 39, Issue 3, May/June 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Emerging research suggests the presence of a blood microbiome in clinically healthy individuals. Characterizing bacterial composition and abundance in blood from a group of healthy horses is of clinical interest. Hypothesis/Objectives Horses in a closed herd environment will have blood microbiomes with similarities among individuals.

Isolamento e teste de susceptibilidade a antimicrobianos de bactérias em infecções uterinas de éguas Isolation and antimicrobial susceptibility of bacteria in uterine infections in mares

Analyzing the Catalytic Role of Active Site Residues in the Fe-type Nitrile Hydratase from \u3cem\u3eComamonas testosteroni\u3c/em\u3e Ni1 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
A strictly conserved active site arginine residue (αR157) and two histidine residues (αH80 and αH81) located near the active site of the Fe-type nitrile hydratase from Comamonas testosteroni Ni1 (CtNHase), were mutated. These mutant enzymes were examined

Effects of Separate and Concomitant TLR-2 and TLR-4 Activation in Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells of Newborn and Adult Horses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Deficient innate and adaptive immune responses cause newborn mammals to be more susceptible to bacterial infections than adult individuals. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are known to play a pivotal role in bacterial recognition and subsequent immune ...
