Feeding of ribbon seals (Phoca fasciata) in the Bering Sea in spring

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 1980
Digestive tracts of 61 ribbon seals (Phoca fasciata) collected in the seasonal pack ice of the Bering Sea during March to June 1976–1979 were examined. Very little fresh food was found in stomachs; however, hard parts of prey, particularly fish otoliths, were found in stomachs and (or) intestines of 28 seals. Based on counts of otoliths, the main prey

Distribution and abundance of spotted seals Phoca largha and ribbon seals Phoca fasciata in the southern Sea of Okhotsk

Ecological Research, 2002
The distribution and abundance of spotted seals ( Phoca largha ) and ribbon seals ( Phoca fasciata ) were assessed in March and April, 2000, by aerial line‐transect surveys along the southern edge of the pack ice off the coast of Hokkaido (southern ...

Comparative morphology of the skull of the Ribbon seal, Histriophoca fasciata, with remarks on systematics of Phocidae

Journal of Zoology, 1970
Study of skulls from 145 Ribbon seals, mainly from the Bering Sea, disclosed much greater variation in form than was indicated by earlier descriptions. The characters of greatest diagnostic value in the Ribbon seal are the short rostrum, broad cranium with reduced temporal fossae.

Seasonal calling activity of ribbon seals in the Nemuro Strait, Hokkaido, Japan

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America
The Nemuro Strait, Japan, is seasonally covered by sea ice, typically from February to April, and an important habitat for ribbon seals (Histriophoca fasciata). Interannual variability in temporal occurrence patterns remain poorly understood. While PAM enables year-round monitoring even in ice-covered conditions, this method generates extensive ...

Seasonal presence of ringed, ribbon, and bearded seal vocalizations in the Chukchi Sea north of Barrow, Alaska

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
Long-term autonomous acoustic recordings were collected between September and June from 2006 through 2009 in the Northeastern Chukchi Sea along the continental slope 120 km north of Barrow, Alaska. These recordings were analyzed for the presence of vocalizations of ringed seals (Phoca hispida), ribbon seals (Histrophoca fasciata), and bearded seals ...

Evaluation of a ship-based unoccupied aircraft system (UAS) for surveys of spotted and ribbon seals in the Bering Sea pack ice

Journal of Unmanned Vehicle Systems, 2015
The remote pack ice of the arctic and subarctic seas is challenging to access, yet extremely important to understand and monitor. The pack ice holds the key to understanding ecosystem responses to climate change and is vital habitat for many species including ice-associated seals.
