Abstract Heat-denatured 16 s ribosomal RNA from Escherichia coli will combine with the total 30 s ribosomal proteins to form partially active 30 s ribosomes. The reconstitution process results in a change in the structure of the RNA, which can be demonstrated by chromatography on columns of methylated albuminkieselguhr.
