Legacy hexaconazole and tricyclazole residues hinder organic transition in paddy rice cultivation
Hexaconazole and tricyclazole residues persisted in paddy soil throughout the three consecutive growing seasons after a single foliar application. These findings, combined with potential animal feed risks from contaminated rice straw, indicate that the current 2‐year organic transitional period is insufficient, necessitating extended conversion periods

Abstract Cropland sparing through yield‐gap closure can help alleviate pressure on natural ecosystems. In this study, we quantified the potential cropland sparing achievable through closing yield gaps, defined as the difference between actual farm yields and potentially attainable yields, while maintaining current total production of double‐season rice

Assessment of corn chlorophyll content via UAV‐derived vegetative indices across growth stages
Abstract Traditional chlorophyll (Chl) assessment methods are labor‐intensive and spatially limited. This study evaluated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) multispectral imagery for nondestructive field‐scale canopy Chl estimation in corn (Zea mays L.) to support precision nutrient management.

Robel Pole Method Can Estimate Cereal Rye Biomass to Optimize Termination Timing
Abstract Fully realizing the benefits of cover crops and minimizing the yield penalty requires knowing when to terminate them. Cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) is the dominant cover crop used in the Midwest US, and previous work has shown that corn (Zea mays L.) yield penalties began to occur more frequently when cereal rye is at ∼1000 lb dry biomass ac ...

Root trait dynamics of historical canola varieties under low and high nitrogen supply
Abstract Nitrogen fertilizer is a major input cost in crop production, making it crucial to enhance nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) to reduce fertilizer dependence without compromising yields. Root system architecture (RSA) is a key determinant of nutrient acquisition, particularly under nutrient‐limited conditions.

Utilizing high‐throughput phenotyping to identify metribuzin tolerance in winter wheat
Abstract Plant breeders and weed scientists address weed management collaboratively by selecting for herbicide tolerance in breeding programs. Metribuzin, a Group 5 PSII‐inhibiting herbicide, is labeled for use in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, application to currently available lines results in frequent, variable, and unpredictable crop injury.

Abstract Plant biomass measurements are critical for crop improvement and breeding programs. Such measurements rely on destructive and labor‐intensive methods that limit continuous measurements of biomass over plant growth stages and time. This study aimed to develop an inexpensive, nondestructive method for estimating aboveground biomass in rice ...
