Jackknife Estimator of Species Richness with S-PLUS

open access: yes
An estimate of the number of species, S , usually called species richness by ecologists, in an area is one of the basic statistics used to ascertain biological diversity. Traditionally ecologists have used the number of species observed in a sample, S_0 ,

Mycobacterial cell division arrest and smooth‐to‐rough envelope transition using CRISPRi‐mediated genetic repression systems

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing and phenotypic exploration in nontuberculous mycobacteria. In this Research Protocol, we describe approaches to control, monitor, and quantitatively assess CRISPRI‐mediated gene silencing in M. smegmatis and M. abscessus model organisms.

SPECIES: An R Package for Species Richness Estimation

open access: yes
We introduce an R package SPECIES for species richness or diversity estimation. This package provides simple R functions to compute point and confidence interval estimates of species number from a few nonparametric and semi-parametric methods.

Scaling Disturbance Instead of Richness to Better Understand Anthropogenic Impacts on Biodiversity

open access: yes, 2015
A primary impediment to understanding how species diversity and anthropogenic disturbance are related is that both diversity and disturbance can depend on the scales at which they are sampled.

When to sample adult caddisflies: data from a five-year study of a first-order Michigan (USA) stream

open access: yesJournal of Freshwater Ecology, 2018
Nearly 20,000 adult caddisfly specimens were collected during May through September 2010–2014 from approximately weekly ultraviolet light samples of Fairbanks Creek in northern Lower Michigan.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.
