Rifampin

American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy, 1972
Rifampin is a potent antituberculous drug. In the treatment of drug-resistant tuberculosis it is highly effective provided it is given in combination with other drugs to which the patient's organisms are sensitive. Rifampin and ethambutol is a particularly powerful combination and will achieve almost 100% sputum conversion.

Rifampin

Pediatrics In Review, 1996
Rifampin is a semisynthetic derivative of rifamycin B that is active against a wide range of microorganisms and bactericidal for extracellular as well as intracellular pathogens. Most gram-positive and many gram-negative bacteria, as well as mycobactenia, are inhibited by nifampin.

Rifampin

Annals of internal medicine, 1976
In 1971, rifampin was approved for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis. At present, the approved indications remain the same. However, rifampin in conjunction with at least one other antituberculous drug may be of great value in therapy of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and infections due to other ...

Verapamil-Rifampin Interaction

Drug Intelligence & Clinical Pharmacy, 1985
A case of verapamil-rifampin interaction is presented in a patient receiving verapamil for supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) and rifampin for pulmonary tuberculosis. The patient experienced recurrent symptomatic SVT, despite receiving verapamil 480 mg po q6h. Serum verapamil concentrations were determined to be extremely low.

Rifampin Drug Interactions

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1984
Rifampin, an antituberculosis agent, is usually administered for nine to 12 months with other antituberculosis drugs or drugs from other classes. A potential for drug interactions often exists because this drug is a potent inducer of drug metabolism. Rifampin causes a proliferation of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and an increase in the cytochrome P-

RIFAMPIN IN DERMATOLOGY

International Journal of Dermatology, 1993
Rifampicin (Rp) is a semisynthetic derivative of Rifamycin B, an antimicrobial agent produced by Streptomyces mediterranei. Rp is a broad spectrum antimicrobial and inhibits the growth of most Gram-positive bacteria, as well as many Gram-negative microorganisms, such as Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, indole-positive and indole-negative Proteus, and ...

Rifampin-induced hypothyroidism

Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, 2006
Three euthyroid patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis developed hypothyroidism after the administration of rifampin. We studied 67 patients with tuberculosis. All of them were treated with rifampin. Of the 67 patients, 42 had negative tests for anti-thyroid antibodies (ATA) and 25 had positive tests for ATA. The diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis was

Digoxin-rifampin interaction

Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, 1984
Digoxin doses required to maintain therapeutic serum concentrations rose substantially in two patients dependent on dialysis with the commencement of rifampin therapy. When rifampin was discontinued, doses fell to requirements before rifampin. Serum digoxin concentration may fall to ineffective levels with rifampin therapy and rise to potentially toxic

Quinidine-Rifampin Interaction

New England Journal of Medicine, 1981
DRUG interactions with quinidine are likely to be clinically important, since quinidine is used in the treatment and prophylaxis of potentially serious arrhythmias, and since there is a relatively narrow range between the therapeutic and toxic concentrations.1 An interaction between quinidine and the anticonvulsant drugs primidone and phenobarbital has
