Wave-driven rip currents in a fringing coral reef channel

Wave-driven channel flows in coral reefs have been described, but their interpretation within a rip current framework has remained less developed than for sandy shores. Here, a rip current in a fringing coral reef was investigated through field observations and an idealized numerical model. Velocity profiles and wave conditions were measured within the

Aerial imagery of the rocky shoreline (RS) at Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove, CA, was captured with an unmanned aerial vehicle. Imagery was georectified and post-processed to observe the surface flow of 2 persistent, stationary rip currents (rips) on the RS.
