How do genomes gain new functional parts? In eukaryotes, which tend to evolve under weak selection, much of the genome is junk. Palazzo and Qiu borrow the logic of Markov chains to show how non‐functional DNA becomes functional through the appearance of intermediate states, which arise due to epistasis, buffering, and biochemical messiness, allowing ...

On a dense minimizer of empirical risk in inverse problems [PDF]
Properties of estimators of a functional parameter in an inverse problem setup are studied. We focus on estimators obtained through dense minimization (as opposed to minimization over \(\delta\)-nets) of suitably defined empirical risk.

In this explorative study, the abundance of circular RNA molecules in bone marrow stem cells was found to be elevated in patients with high‐risk myelodysplastic neoplasms, and to be associated with an increased risk of progression to acute myeloid leukemia.

Optimal Control Systems Design of Communication Networks
the principles of control systems' optimal design are given while it is running two main modes: stationary and automatic. The search methods of decisions in accordance with these modes are offered.

In the present work, we have identified a transcriptional signature based on the differential expression of six genes (BCL2&MAST4, HSH2D&LAT2, METRN&PITPNM2) that would facilitate the early detection of T‐cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T‐ALL) patients prone to a poor treatment response and could be implemented at diagnosis, along with other risk ...

This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Minimizing communication risk in construction: a Delphi study of the key role of project managers
All significant construction projects involve the project owner and the contractor, as well as their project managers. Following upon recent research into the multiple principal-agent problem, which was applied to the minimization of communication risk ...

On robustness properties of convex risk minimization methods for pattern recognition [PDF]
The paper brings together methods from two disciplines: machine learning theory and robust statistics. Robustness properties of machine learning methods based on convex risk minimization are investigated for the problem of pattern recognition ...

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.
