Fırat Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi, 2020 Cumhuriyet Döneminde ilk nüfus sayımının yapıldığı 1927 yılında Rize’nin nüfusu 171.667 kişi olarak tespit edilmiştir ve iller sıralamasında 37. sırada yer almıştır. Rize’nin doğal nüfus artışı genelde ülke ortalaması ile paralellik göstermişse de ekonomik zayıflığından kaynaklı yüksek göç nedeniyle gerçek nüfus artışı hep düşük seyretmiştir.
