The binding of thiostrepton to 23S ribosomal RNA
Biochimie, 1991The antibiotic, thiostrepton, binds to 23S ribosomal RNA from E coli with a dissociation constant (KD) of 2.4 x 10(-7) M. The specificity of the interaction was established using 16S rRNA and modified or mutationally-altered 23S rRNA. Thus, no binding was detected with rRNA from the 30S subunit nor with rRNA modified in vitro by the thiostrepton ...

23 s precursor ribosomal RNA of Rhodopseudomonas spherouides
Journal of Molecular Biology, 1970The bulk RNA of Rhodopseudomonas spheroides fails to show 23 s RNA when examined by either sucrose gradient sedimentation or polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Careful extraction of RNA by any of several techniques reveals ribosomal RNA's of three molecular weights: 5.3 × 105, 4.2 × 105 and 3.6 × 104 daltons, as determined by mobility on ...

A hierarchical model for evolution of 23S ribosomal RNA
Nature, 2009The emergence of the ribosome constituted a pivotal step in the evolution of life. This event happened nearly four billion years ago, and any traces of early stages of ribosome evolution are generally thought to have completely eroded away. Surprisingly, a detailed analysis of the structure of the modern ribosome reveals a concerted and modular scheme ...

Fragmentation heterogeneity of 23S ribosomal RNA in Haemophilus species
Gene, 1999The fragmentation of 23S rRNA of 23 Haemophilus influenzae strains and eight strains belonging to other Haemophilus species was investigated. Instead of intact molecules, the 23S rRNA molecules were found to be cleaved into two to five smaller conserved fragments in most strains examined, especially in H. influenzae type b (5/6) and nontypeable strains

Protein folding in Escherichia coli: role of 23S ribosomal RNA
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Protein Structure and Molecular Enzymology, 1999Post-translational control of Escherichia coli ribosome on newly synthesised polypeptide leading to its active conformation (protein folding) has been shown in the case of the enzyme beta-galactosidase. As expected, antibiotics chloramphenicol and lincomycin, which bind to 23S rRNA/50S subunit and kasugamycin and streptomycin which interact with the ...

Concerning the thermal stability of E. coli 23S ribosomal RNA
Biochimie, 1983Total RNA prepared from E. coli by several extraction procedures behaves as a mixture of covalently continuous heat stable 23S, 16S and 4-5S components. 16S rRNA remains heat stable after isolation from such preparations, whereas isolated 23S rRNA is heat labile but becomes heat stable after EDTA treatment.

The excision of intervening sequences from salmonella 23S ribosomal RNA
Cell, 1990Novel, approximately 90 bp intervening sequences (IVs) were discovered within the 23S rRNA genes of S. typhimurium and S. arizonae. These non-rRNA sequences are transcribed and then excised during rRNA maturation. The rRNA fragments that result from the excision of the extra sequences are not religated. This results in fragmented 23S rRNAs.
