Viral suppressors of RNA silencing
Trends in Plant Science, 2011The infection and replication of viruses in the host induce diverse mechanisms for combating viral infection. One of the best-studied antiviral defence mechanisms is based on RNA silencing. Consistently, several viral suppressors of RNA silencing (VSRs) have been identified from almost all plant virus genera, which are surprisingly diverse within and ...

Plant viral suppressors of RNA silencing
Virus Research, 2004RNA silencing is an ancient eukaryotic pathway in which double stranded RNA (dsRNA) triggers destruction of related RNAs in the cell. Early studies in plants pointed to a role for this pathway as a defense against viruses. Most known plant viruses have RNA genomes and replicate via dsRNA intermediates, thereby serving as potent inducers of RNA ...

RNA-silencing suppressors of geminiviruses
Journal of General Plant Pathology, 2008Geminiviruses are single-stranded (ss) DNA viruses that not only cause devastating diseases of important food and fiber crops worldwide, but also are important models to study fundamental aspects of virus-induced gene silencing and RNA interference.

AtRLI2 is an Endogenous Suppressor of RNA Silencing
Plant Molecular Biology, 2006RNA silencing is a mechanism involved in gene regulation during development and anti-viral defense in plants and animals. Although many viral suppressors of this mechanism have been described up to now, this is not the case for endogenous suppressors.

RNA Silencing Suppressors: How Viruses Fight Back
Future Virology, 2008RNA silencing is a collective term that refers to diverse RNA-directed processes resulting in sequence-specific degradation of target RNA and repression of gene expression, either at transcriptional or post-transcriptional levels. In animals, fungi and plants, RNA silencing represents a mechanism guided by small RNAs against virus infection.

Suppressing RNA silencing with small molecules and the viral suppressor of RNA silencing protein p19
Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2015RNA silencing is a gene regulatory and host defense mechanism whereby small RNA molecules are engaged by Argonaute (AGO) proteins, which facilitate gene knockdown of complementary mRNA targets. Small molecule inhibitors of AGO represent a convenient method for reversing this effect and have applications in human therapy and biotechnology.

Effects and side-effects of viral RNA silencing suppressors on short RNAs
Trends in Plant Science, 2004In eukaryotes, short RNAs play a crucial regulatory role in many processes including development, maintenance of genome stability and antiviral responses. These different but overlapping RNA-guided pathways are collectively termed 'RNA silencing'. To counteract an antiviral RNA silencing response, plant viruses express silencing suppressor proteins ...

Crystal structure of p19 ? a universal suppressor of RNA silencing
Trends in Biochemical Sciences, 2004RNA silencing in plants has an antiviral role and, consequently, plant viruses encode counter-defensive suppressor proteins that block this process. The recently reported crystal structure of two Tombusvirus suppressor proteins reveals a novel RNA-binding structure and illustrates precisely how the silencing mechanism is blocked.

RNA silencing is triggered by double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs), and the dsRNAs are processed into 21to 24-nulceotide (nt) short interfering RNAs (siRNAs) by a host dsRNA-specific ribonuclease, Dicer. The siRNAs are subsequently incorporated into ARGONAUTE (AGO) proteins and serve as a guide for either sequence-specific cleavage or translational repression

Identification of two RNA silencing suppressors from banana bunchy top virus
Archives of Virology, 2009In order to suppress RNA silencing, many plant and some animal viruses encode RNA silencing suppressors to achieve infection. In this study, we report that B3 and B4, encoded by DNA3 and DNA4 of banana bunchy top virus (BBTV), exhibit RNA silencing suppression activity.
