A Unified Nonlinear Elastic Model for Rock Material

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
Under conditions of low or medium stress, rocks that are in the compression state exhibit perceivable nonlinear elastic characteristics. After a comprehensive review of the existing nonlinear elastic models of rocks and joints, we proposed a new unified ...

Rock's pill that rocked the world

open access: yesSouth African Medical Journal, 2010
I was a rookie doctor on the goldmines in the early 1960s. Part of my duties was to look after the families in the villages of the Anglo American mines at Welkom in the Free State. Their invariably large numbers of children prompted me to enquire whether they wished to have assistance in family planning.

Robust acute myeloid leukemia engraftment in humanized scaffolds using injectable biomaterials and intravenous xenotransplantation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Patient‐derived xenografts (PDXs) can be improved by implantation of a humanized niche. We tested different biomaterials and approaches, and demonstrate that the combination of an injectable biomaterial for scaffold creation plus an intravenous route for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) xenotransplantation provide the most convenient and robust approach to

Rock Emissivity Measurement for Infrared Thermography Engineering Geological Applications

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Infrared thermography is a growing technology in the engineering geological field both for the remote survey of rock masses and as a laboratory tool for the non-destructive characterization of intact rock.

Polyhedral colloidal `rocks': low-dimensional networks [PDF]

open access: yesSoft Matter 8 1163-1167 (2012), 2011
We introduce a model system of anisotropic colloidal `rocks'. Due to their shape, the bonding introduced via non-absorbing polymers is profoundly different from spherical particles: bonds between rocks are rigid against rotation, leading to strong frustration. We develop a geometric model which captures the essence of the rocks.

The atypical KRASQ22K mutation directs TGF‐β response towards partial epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition in patient‐derived colorectal cancer tumoroids

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
TGF‐β has a complex role in cancer, exhibiting both tumor‐suppressive and tumor‐promoting properties. Using a series of differentiated tumoroids, derived from different stages and mutational background of colorectal cancer patients, we replicate this duality of TGF‐β in vitro. Notably, the atypical but highly aggressive KRASQ22K mutation rendered early‐

Time-based Signal Processing and 'Shape' in Alternative Rock Recordings

open access: yesIASPM Journal, 2016
This article considers the impact of time-based signal processors on the ‘shape’ of alternative rock recordings. The concept of musical ‘shape’ is considered here as both textural and gestural.

Study on Changes in Physical and Mechanical Properties and Integrity Decay of Sandstone Subjected to Freeze–Thaw Cycling

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
To investigate the effects of long-term freeze–thaw cycles on the physical and mechanical properties as well as the attenuation trend of rocks, this study conducted saturated freeze–thaw tests on coarse sandstone and fine sandstone samples collected from
