Classification of filled joint based on the characteristics of its constitutive components [PDF]
Filled joints in rock mass pose a number of constructional problems. When filled joints are reckoned to be critical to an engineering structure, their behaviours are often studied using expensive in-situ testing and complex full-scale physical modelling.

Hepatocyte BDNF Acts as a Novel Immune Checkpoint to Restrain TLR4‐Mediated Acute Hepatitis
This study identifies hepatocyte‐derived BDNF as an endogenous TLR4 antagonist that alleviates acute hepatitis. BDNF is downregulated in hepatocytes via REST‐mediated transcriptional repression during ALI/ALF. Mechanistically, BDNF binds to TLR4 on macrophages to suppress inflammation.

Gastric cancer‐derived exosomal TAGLN2 is identified as a key mediator of vascular reprogramming, with significantly elevated levels detected in patient serum. Independent of canonical SEMA4D signaling, it nucleates a cytoplasmic TAGLN2/NRP1/SEMA4D ternary complex that dually activates YAP, promoting angiogenesis, vascular dysfunction, and metastasis ...

Application of discrete fracture networks (DFN) in the stability analysis of Delabole Slate Quarry, Cornwall, UK [PDF]
This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from ARMA.50th US Rock Mechanics/Geomechanics Symposium, Houston, USA, 26-29 June 2016The failure mechanism of rock slopes is mainly controlled by the strength and orientation of ...

Impact of mechanical heterogeneity on joint density in a welded ignimbrite [PDF]
Joints are conduits for groundwater, hydrocarbons and hydrothermal fluids. Robust fluid flow models rely on accurate characterisation of joint networks, in particular joint density.

Spectroscopic Evidence of Edge‐Localized States in an Antiferromagnet Topological Insulator NdBi
Using spin‐polarized scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) in conjunction with quasiparticle interference, we successfully identify distinct signatures of the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic terminations in NdBi, a rare‐earth monopnictide exhibiting non‐trivial topology and magnetism. We demonstrate that step edges on ferromagnetic surfaces host well‐

When tunnel boring machines (TBMs) excavate through jointed rock masses, the cutting efficiency is strongly affected by the shear strength of joints, the mechanism of which, however, remains poorly understood.

Glaucoma, a major cause of blindness, involves retinal ganglion cell (RGC) degeneration. This study shows growth hormone‐releasing hormone receptor (GHRHR) deficiency preserves RGC survival and restores vision, unlike activation which only aids survival.
