An iron-binding protein of entomopathogenic fungus suppresses the proliferation of host symbiotic bacteria

open access: yesMicrobiome
Background Entomopathogenic fungal infection-induced dysbiosis of host microbiota offers a window into understanding the complex interactions between pathogenic fungi and host symbionts.

Preparation and characterisation of food grade chitosan from housefly larvae

open access: yesCzech Journal of Food Sciences, 2011
The preparation and characterisation of food-grade chitosan from housefly larvae are reported. A refinement procedure was developed to remove larval mouth hooks from the primary chitosan product, which greatly improved the quality of the final product ...

Risk factors for human acute leptospirosis in northern Tanzania [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Introduction: Leptospirosis is a major cause of febrile illness in Africa but little is known about risk factors for human infection. We conducted a cross-sectional study to investigate risk factors for acute leptospirosis and Leptospira ...

Comprehensive evaluation of the bactericidal activities of free bile acids in the large intestine of humans and rodents

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2017
In addition to functioning as detergents that aid digestion of dietary lipids in the intestine, some bile acids have been shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity.

Biologically‐Inspired Melt Electrowriting for the Generation of Highly Biomimetic Functional Myocardium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this work, melt electrowriting is used to fabricate a 3D printed scaffold design that generates engineered cardiac tissues with in‐plane contraction, mimicking natural myocardium. It is shown that these tissues display advanced maturation and functionality.

The c-Jun N-terminal kinase pathway of a vector insect is activated by virus capsid protein and promotes viral replication

open access: yeseLife, 2017
No evidence has shown whether insect-borne viruses manipulate the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling pathway of vector insects. Using a system comprising the plant virus Rice stripe virus (RSV) and its vector insect, the small brown planthopper, we ...

Total orthotopic small bowel transplantation in swine under FK 506 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1994
Previous experimental studies in rodents and in dogs have established the efficacy of FK 506 in controlling the immunologic events following small bowel or multivisceral transplantation.1–5 To complete the assessment of FK 506 in experimental small bowel

Comparison of predation by two suburban cats in New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
To study the effects domestic cats may have on surrounding wildlife, a complete list was made of 558 items caught in the garden or brought into the house by one cat over 17 years, from 1988 to 2005.

Domestic cats and dogs create a landscape of fear for pest rodents around rural homesteads

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Using domestic predators such as cats to control rodent pest problems around farms and homesteads is common across the world. However, practical scientific evidence on the impact of such biological control in agricultural settings is often lacking.

Photothermal Hydrogel with Mn3O4 Nanoparticles Alleviates Intervertebral Disc Degeneration by Scavenging ROS and Regulating Extracellular Matrix Metabolism

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The MPTT‐nanozyme‐hydrogel system (Mn3O4@ChS‐HA) provides a multifunctional therapeutic strategy for intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD), effectively targeting oxidative stress and enhancing AF repair by restoring extracellular matrix (ECM) and redox homeostasis.
