On the Handling Qualities of Two Flying Wing Aircraft Configurations

open access: yesAerospace, 2021
The coupling of the longitudinal and lateral stability modes of an aeroplane is considered in two cases: (i) weak coupling, when the changes in the frequency and damping of the phugoid, short period, dutch roll, and helical modes are small, i.e., the ...

Magnetic Droplet Manipulation on Open Surfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Recent advances in the manipulation of magnetic droplets demonstrate various manipulations on open surfaces, including transport, splitting, merging, and force‐controlled motion, enabled by magnetic particles and external fields. ABSTRACT Manipulation of liquids on a smaller scale enables applications in various fields, particularly diagnostics and ...

On Aerodynamic Roll Damping [Elektronisk resurs] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In this paper an approach for estimating aerodynamic roll damping is formulated. The approach utilizes wind tunnel tests and the concept of effective levers to relate roll induced apparent wind to a damping moment. Evaluation of the approach on a typical

Multiobjective Codesign Optimization of a Planar Pneumatic Artificial Muscle‐Based Snake‐Like Robot for Enhanced Agility and Energy Efficiency

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A codesign multiobjective optimization framework was developed to enhance the morphology and controller of a snake‐like robot driven by artificial muscles. It improved planar locomotion, agility, and power efficiency. The approach optimized link geometry and controller gains, revealing that shorter muscles near joints and longer linkages maximize ...

Ship roll damping coefficient prediction using CFD [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
For a ship undergoing roll motion at a resonance frequency, the roll restoring moment and virtual moment of inertia counteract each other and only the damping moment resists the roll exciting moments.

Direct lateral maneuvers in hawkmoths

open access: yesBiology Open, 2016
We used videography to investigate direct lateral maneuvers, i.e. ‘sideslips’, of the hawkmoth Manduca sexta. M. sexta sideslip by rolling their entire body and wings to reorient their net force vector. During sideslip they increase net aerodynamic force

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Numerical study of scale effects of viscous roll damping for a container ship

open access: yesBrodogradnja
In this paper, the scale effects on a container ship’s roll motion are investigated by numerical approach. The accuracy of the numerical method is verified by comparing numerical results with experimental data through a grid sensitivity study.
