A two-year field experiment was carried out at the MOVE (MOnsampolo VEgetables) organic long-term experiment, Monsampolo del Tronto – Central Italy – growing transplanted zucchini (Cucurbita pepo L.) to compare the effect of different tillage strategies and cover crop management (no cover crop; green manured barley; in-line till/roller crimped barley ...

Nitrogen (N) release from roll-killed legume cover crops was determined for hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth), crimson clover (Trifolium incarnatum L.), and a hairy vetch + rye (Secale cereale L.) biculture in an organic corn production system in North Carolina, USA.

In a weed-free field with ideal weather conditions, a cash crop can be planted 3 weeks after rolling a mature cereal rye winter cover crop without using herbicides. However, cloudy and wet weather can delay the rolling and/or desiccation of rye, thereby delaying cash crop planting which can negatively impact yield.

Weed Science, 2011
Integrated weed management tactics are necessary to develop cropping systems that enhance soil quality using conservation tillage and reduced herbicide or organic weed management. In this study, we varied planting and termination date of two cereal rye cultivars (‘Aroostook’ and ‘Wheeler’) and a rye/hairy vetch mixture to evaluate cover-crop biomass ...

Cover-Crop Roller–Crimper Contributes to Weed Management in No-Till Soybean
Weed Science, 2010Termination of cover crops prior to no-till planting of soybean is typically accomplished with burndown herbicides. Recent advances in cover-crop roller–crimper design offer the possibility of reliable physical termination of cover crops without tillage.
