Recently, electrochemical energy storage devices and hybrid lithium-ion capacitors (HLICs), in particular have received intensive interest because of their ability to combine the performance of high-energy lithium-ion batteries and high-power ...

Wearable electrochemical sensors for monitoring performance athletes [PDF]
Nowadays, wearable sensors such as heart rate monitors and pedometers are in common use. The use of wearable systems such as these for personalized exercise regimes for health and rehabilitation is particularly interesting.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Syntheses and properties of imidazopyridine-based ionic liquids
We have synthesized imidazopyridine-type ionic liquids and evaluated their properties. [Cnimpy][Br] (n = 4, 6, 8, 10), in which an alkyl group was introduced at the N1 position of imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine, were all solid at room temperature.

Liquid-like cationic sub-lattice in copper selenide clusters
Copper selenide is super-ionic only at high temperatures. Here, the authors discover room temperature super-ionic behaviour in ultrasmall clusters of Cu2Se—but not in its larger or bulk forms—owing to an unusual liquid-like cationic sub-lattice, in which

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

pH‐mediated activation of the lysosomal arginine sensor SLC38A9
Cells monitor nutrient levels via the lysosomal transporter SLC38A9 to activate the mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1). This study reveals that SLC38A9 function is regulated by pH. We identified histidine 544 as a critical pH sensor that undergoes conformational changes to control amino acid efflux from lysosomes; therefore, it ...

Interferometric method for determining the sum of the flexoelectric coefficients (e1+e3) in an ionic nematic material [PDF]
The time-dependent periodic distortion profile in a nematic liquid crystal phase grating has been measured from the displacement of tilt fringes in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer.

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics
