Root exudation is an important ecological phenomenon which can manipulate plant and microbial succession. Under sterile conditions only 5–10% of the fixed carbon is released by roots compared to 12–% released from roots in nonsterile soil and the increase is attributed to rhizosphere microflora. There is more exudation by symbiotic plants.

Chemotaxis of Zoospores for Root Exudates

A chemotactic response of the zoospores of a soil-inhabiting plant pathogenic fungus, Phytophthora cinnamomi, for roots of avocado seedlings was observed. The chemotaxis of the zoospores and chemotropy of their germ tubes were directly related to infection and disease production.

The aim of this investigation was to determine if sorgoleone (SGL), ap-benzoquinone inSorghum bicolor root exudate, is a photosynthesis inhibitor. Assays usingGlycine max leaf disks showed concentrations as low as 10μM SGL inhibited oxygen evolution more than 50%.

The terpenoid aldehydes, desoxyhemigossypol, desoxy-6-methoxyhemigossypol, hemigossypol, 6-methoxyhemigossypol, gossypol, 6-methoxygossypol, and 6,6′-dimethoxygossypol, previously reported to be present in cotton roots (Gossypium hivsutum L.) were found on absorbing surfaces adjacent to roots.
