Local Fractal Dimensions and Multifractal Analysis of the Root System of Legumes

open access: yesPlant Production Science, 2000
The fractal dimension (D) is the main concept of fractal geometry. D may have the potential to describe morphology in overall terms for root systems quantitatively.

Characterization of Root and Shoot Traits in Wheat Cultivars with Putative Differences in Root System Size

open access: yesAgronomy, 2018
Root system size is a key trait for improving water and nitrogen uptake efficiency in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). This study aimed (i) to characterize the root system and shoot traits of five wheat cultivars with apparent differences in root system ...

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

The effect of amorphous silica on soil–plant–water relations in soils with contrasting textures

open access: yesScientific Reports
This study investigates how amorphous silica (ASi) influences soil–plant–water interactions in distinct soil textures. A sandy loam and silty clay soil were mixed with 0 and 2% ASi, and their impact on soil retention and soil hydraulic conductivity ...

Descendant root volume varies as a function of root type: estimation of root biomass lost during uprooting in Pinus pinaster

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2013
Root systems of woody plants generally display a strong relationship between the cross-sectional area (CSA) or cross-sectional diameter (CSD) of a root and the dry weight of biomass (DWd) or root volume (Vd) that has grown (i.e., is descendent) from that

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Declining citrus root systems: Relationship of root systems to top growth and production investigated in citrus orchard rejuvenation program studies

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1956
The decline of citrus root systems is one of the more serious current problems in production and fruit size. During the past few years, quantitative information has been accumulating on the extent of citrus root decline and its relationship to growth and

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Hormonal regulation of wheat growth during hydroponic culture [PDF]

open access: yes
Hormonal control of root growth has been explored as one means to alleviate the crowding of plant root systems experienced in prototype hydroponic biomass production chambers being developed by the CELSS Breadboard Project.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These
