Breeding for root yield in alfalfa

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Plant Science, 1991
Winter survival of alfalfa (Medicago sauva L.) has often been associated with the size of the root system but breeding for a larger root system has never received much attention. The objectives of this study were to detect variability for root traits among seven alfalfa entries grown under two nitrogen fertilizer treatments (R- and N-treatments) which

Effect of abamectin on root‐knot nematodes and tomato yield

Pest Management Science, 2012
AbstractBACKGROUND: Tomato growers in Shandong Province, China, commonly face heavy root‐knot nematode infestations. Current methods of control include cadusafos and methyl bromide (MeBr), but alternative methods are required because of the high toxicity of these pesticides and the ecological risk of their use.

Species mixing boosts root yield in mangrove trees

Oecologia, 2012
Enhanced species richness can stimulate the productivity of plant communities; however, its effect on the belowground production of forests has scarcely been tested, despite the role of tree roots in carbon storage and ecosystem processes. Therefore, we tested for the effects of tree species richness on mangrove root biomass: thirty-two 6 m by 6 m ...

Root pruning and yield of maize

Netherlands Journal of Plant Pathology, 1965
The effect on yield of artificial injury to the root system of maize was assessed in two trials both on sandy soil at Wageningen. In the first in 1960 only severe injury (removal of half of the root system in the five-leaf stage or a third or more at the beginning and end of flowering) reduced the yield of straw significantly.

Strain localization below the root of an yielding notch

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1984
Abstract Prandtl-Orowan mechanism for plastic crack extension is discussed. A method of calculating strain localization below an yield notch in Prager's elastic-plastic material is described. Firstly, a boundary value problem is solved for an elastic notch under the combined loadings of normal and shear stresses acting on its flank faces.

Bioassay to assess root rot in pea and effect of root rot on yield

Netherlands Journal of Plant Pathology, 1993
Infection of pea roots by soil-borne pathogens causes foot and root rot. In 1985 research was started to develop a method to predict the root rot likely to occur in prospective pea fields. In a bioassay the pea cultivar Finale was sown in a composite soil sample from each field in pots under standardized conditions in the greenhouse.
