Exponential Growth of ROS [ROS Topics]
IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, 2011This paper discusses about open-source robot operating system (ROS). ROS has expanded to include dozens of robots and an exponentially growing amount of code. Robot operating system has served as one of the premier libraries for robotics code in the world. Software shared through ROS is available for anyone to use, edit, and update.

ROS Topics: Capabilities [ROS Topics]
IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, 2014One of the challenges of robot software systems is that they typically have a large number of components that interact with each other. A single robot may have processes that are doing path planning, obstacle avoidance, manipulation, sensor processing, and so on.

Do you design robots? You probably ponder how you should partition functions into subsystems embedded in the robot. If you use ROS in your robot, you have additional concerns around how to integrate ROS's high-level functions with lower-level subsystems. You want to understand current and future design alternatives advantages and tradeoffs.

On the Energy Efficiency Design Index of Ro-Ro passenger and Ro-Ro cargo ships
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part M: Journal of Engineering for the Maritime Environment, 2016This study proposes alternative formulations of the ship-specific correction factor ( f jRoRo ) pertaining to Ro-Ro cargo and Ro-Ro passenger ships, as defined in the Energy Efficiency Design Index equation according to the International Maritime Organization Resolution MEPC 245(66).

Integrating ROS and MATLAB [ROS Topics]
IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, 2015The Robot Operating System (ROS) has gained wide currency for the creation of working robotic systems, initially in the laboratory but now also in industry. Despite ongoing evolution, the fundamental principles of publishing and subscribing on topics, application-specific messages, invoking services, and sharing parameters have remained constant. The ...

ROS Expands the World for Quadriplegics [ROS Topics]
IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, 2014The most compelling use of personal robots is to provide assistance for people with disabilities. For example, many quadriplegics can now move about and interact with the world outside their bodies using telerobotics. Over the past few years, the Robots for Humanity project has experimented with telerobotics, using robots ranging from the powerful PR2 ...

IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, 2010
In the last issue of IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, we talked about a number of different robots running the robot operating system (ROS). In this issue, we are going to focus on one in particular, the PR2. Willow Garage announced in May the 11 institutions that will get to use a PR2 for free for two years through its PR2 Beta Program (Figure 1).

RO/RO Safety After the Estonia—A Report on the Activities of the Ad Hoc Panel on RO/RO Safety
Marine Technology and SNAME News, 1995The sinking of the Estonia spurred renewed interest in the international maritime community to conduct a thorough assessment of RO/RO passenger ferry vessel operations. SNAME, in keeping with its Strategic Plan, formed an ad hoc panel to assess the safety of the Canadian and U.S. RO/RO passenger ferry fleets.
