On caustics associated with Rossby waves [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
summary:Rossby wave equations characterize a class of wave phenomena occurring in geophysical fluid dynamics. One technique useful in the analysis of these waves is the geometrical optics, or multi-dimensional WKB technique.

Rossby wave instability in astrophysical discs [PDF]

open access: yesFluid Dynamics Research, 2014
A brief review is given of the Rossby wave instability (RWI) in astrophysical discs. In non-self-gravitating discs, around for example a newly forming stars, the instability can be triggered by an axisymmetric bump at some radius $r_0$ in the disc surface mass-density. It gives rise to exponentially growing non-axisymmetric perturbation [$\propto \exp({

The relationship between equatorial wave interaction and heavy rainfall in Southeast Asia

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study examines the statistical relationship between co‐occurring equatorial waves and heavy rainfall in Southeast Asia. Heavy rainfall is more closely related to combined wave activity than to individual waves in many regions of Southeast Asia. The figure shows GPM–IMERG rainfall (shading) and ERA5 850‐hPa winds (vectors) composited on days when ...

How interference between the North Atlantic Oscillation and the tropical Indo‐Pacific convection modulates wave trains along the subtropical jet: Impacts on the Asian winter climate

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This study reveals that the combined effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and anomalous Indo‐Pacific Walker circulation on the excitation of the wave train along the wintertime subtropical jet strongly depend on their phase combination. Their impacts interfere constructively or destructively over South Asia, leading to notable differences in

Multiple satellite observations of oceanic planetary waves: techniques and findings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Recent satellite-based observations of oceanic planetary waves have improved our knowledge of the wave properties and lead to advancements in the theory.

Ensemble reliability and the signal‐to‐noise paradox in ECMWF subseasonal forecasts

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
We derive a general expression for the ratio of predictable components (RPC) in terms of correlation, spread–error ratio, and total variance ratio. Physical constraints on the admissible solutions (i.e., real‐valued and non‐negative variances) provide a mechanism to identify statistically paradoxical sample combinations of reliability and correlation ...

The mixed Rossby–gravity wave on the spherical Earth [PDF]

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 2018
This work revisits the theory of the mixed Rossby–gravity (MRG) wave on a sphere. Three analytic methods are employed in this study: (a) derivation of a simple ad hoc solution corresponding to the MRG wave that reproduces the solutions of Longuet‐Higgins and Matsuno in the limits of zero and infinite Lamb's parameter, respectively, while remaining ...

Contrasting the synoptic drivers of the UK heatwaves of 1976, 2003, 2018 and 2022

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
UK summer heatwaves are dictated by the polar jet stream position and sea surface temperature (SST) variability, affecting the Summer North Atlantic Oscillation (SNAO) index. The SNAO can determine and influence the Central England Precipitation (CEP) and Central England Temperature (CET).

On the Connection between Rieger-type and Magneto-Rossby Waves Driving the Frequency of the Large Solar Eruptions during Solar Cycles 19–25

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Global solar activity variation mainly occurs over about an 11 yr cycle. However, both longer and shorter periodicities than the solar cycle are also present in many different solar activity indices.

Extreme rainfall in southern China in April 2024 and its potential link to weather events across south Asia

open access: yesWeather, EarlyView.
This study documents the unseasonal and prolonged heavy rain events which occurred in southern China during April 2024. In this series of extreme rainfall events, Guangdong province recorded extreme rainfall exceeding 6‐sigma of climatology, with eleven cities reporting record‐breaking rainfall.
