Effect of Wind Turbine Blade Rotation on Triggering Lightning: An Experimental Study

open access: yesEnergies, 2016
Compared with other lightning targets on the ground, the most notable feature of a wind turbine is that the blades are usually in a rotating state when lightning strikes.

Analytical periodic motions in a parametrically excited, nonlinear rotating blade

open access: yes, 2013
The stability and bifurcation analyses of periodic motions in a rotating blade subject to a torsional excitation are investigated. For high speed rotations, cubic geometric nonlinearity and gyroscopic effects of the rotating blade are considered.

Testing and Simulation of Multilayer Polyvinylidene Fluoride‐Based Piezoelectric Energy Harvester Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
The study considers the use of polymer/dielectric‐based multilayers piezoelectric Energy Harvesters (EH) to produce an output voltage and current, by exploiting the mechanical energy provided by human organs movements. In particular, the heart motion is considered from the kinematic viewpoint, and a multiphysics theoretical model is developed to assess

Large Faraday Rotation in Liquid Crystals With Embedded Paramagnetic Ions (Cu2+, VO2+) at Room Temperature

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Large Faraday rotation at room temperature is observed in thin films of discotic copper (Cu2+: 3d9) and vanadyl (VO2+: 3d1) enaminoketone complexes. The large Verdet constant originates from a high density of paramagnetic centers, metal‐ligand p−d hybridization and π orbitals involved in optical transitions (identified by DFT calculations), as well as ...

Turbulent flow on a planar moving belt and a rotating disk: modelling and comparisons

open access: yes, 2007
Modelling of the fully turbulent flow produced on a moving belt and of that induced on a rotating disk is described, for each of which a more analytical approach is adopted than previously seen.

Turbine cooling and heat transfer modelling for gas turbine performance simulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The successful design of cooling systems for gas turbine engines is a key factor to feasibility of new projects, as the trend for increasing turbine entry temperatures implies requirements for more sophisticated cooling methods.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Simulating eddy current sensor outputs for blade tip timing

open access: yesAdvances in Mechanical Engineering, 2018
Blade tip timing is a contactless method used to monitor the vibration of blades in rotating machinery. Blade vibration and clearance are important diagnostic features for condition monitoring, including the detection of blade cracks.
