Estimation of Round-off Errors in OpenMP Codes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
It is crucial to control round-off error propagation in numerical simulations, because they can significantly affect computed results, especially in parallel codes like OpenMP ones. In this paper, we present a new version of the CADNA library that enables the numerical validation of OpenMP codes.

ROUND-OFF ERRORS IN FLOATING-POINT ADDITIONS

open access: yesMemoirs of the Faculty of Science, Kyushu University. Series A, Mathematics, 1985
Models of algorithms of floating-point addition are designed for chopping, correctly rounding and augmentation rounding arithmetics with finite-length accumulators. The chopping arithmetic is shown to match with the simplest software, which calculates round-off errors.

Bounding the Round-Off Error of the Upwind Scheme for Advection [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing, 2022
Numerical simulations are carefully-written programs, and their correctness is based on mathematical results. Nevertheless, those programs rely on floating-point arithmetic and the corresponding round-off errors are often ignored. This article deals with a specific simple scheme applied to advection, that is a particular equation from hydrodynamics ...

USING RATIONAL NUMBERS AND PARALLEL COMPUTING TO EFFICIENTLY AVOID ROUND-OFF ERRORS ON MAP SIMPLIFICATION

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Cartografia, 2018
This paper presents EPLSimp, an algorithm for map generalization that avoids the creation of topological inconsistencies. EPLSimp is based on Visvalingam-Whyatt's (VW) algorithm on which least "important" points are removed first.

On the round-off error in the method of successive over-relaxation [PDF]

open access: yesMathematics of Computation, 1964
The asymptotic behavior of the round-off error, which accumulates when the well-known iterative method of (point) successive over-relaxation is used to solve a large-scale system of linear equations, is examined by means of a statistical model. The local round-off errors are treated as independent random variables and expressions for the mean and ...

ANALYSIS OF ROUND OFF ERRORS WITH REVERSIBILITY TEST AS A DYNAMICAL INDICATOR [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, 2012
We compare the divergence of orbits and the reversibility error for discrete time dynamical systems. These two quantities are used to explore the behavior of the global error induced by round off in the computation of orbits. The similarity of results found for any system we have analyzed suggests the use of the reversibility error, whose computation ...

The effects of large round‐off errors on the performance of control charts for the mean when the quality characteristic is normally distributed with a known variance

open access: yesIET Science, Measurement & Technology
This research discusses the effects of large round‐off errors on the performance of control charts for means when a process is normally distributed with a known variance and a fixed sample size.

Generating formally certified bounds on values and round-off errors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
International audienceWe present a new tool that generates bounds on the values and the round-off errors of programs using floating point operations. The tool is based on forward error analysis and interval arithmetic.
