Tower Controllers' Response Behavior to Runway Safety Alerts

Proceedings of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Annual Meeting, 2010
As decision support tools to improve runway safety are introduced into Airport Traffic Control Towers, it is critical to understand their impact on controller performance. A Tower Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) simulation was conducted to evaluate the behavior of Local controllers in the presence of tower-based runway safety alerts.

Soil Improvement of Runway STRIP and Runway End Safety Area (RESA) through an Innovative Methodology

Transportation and Development Institute Congress 2011, 2011
National and international regulations define requirements for bearing capacity of runway strip and runway end safety areas. Bearing capacity requirements imply the reduction of damages to an overrunning aircraft, facilitating its deceleration and allowing the easy access of emergency vehicles.

Improving runway safety: A solution and its associated challenges

2010 Integrated Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance Conference Proceedings, 2010
• Goal is to improve runway safety by reducing runway and taxiway incursions and excursions • We propose achieving this by introducing three new flight deck-centric data link applications that offer operational safety enhancements on the aerodrome surface • We also propose updating onboard AMDBs via data link, using an authoritative data source, and ...

LaGuardia Airport Design Build Extends Runway Decks for Safety Improvement

IABSE Reports, 2019
<p>Land is scarce near LaGuardia airport, a major and unique component of NYC's urban infrastructure, and the safety of air passengers and neighboring Queens NY residents was of paramount importance in the design. The challenge of expanding the runways was met with design-build for both quick and efficient design and construction which could also

Flight deck based indications and alerting to increase runway safety

2008 Integrated Communications, Navigation and Surveillance Conference, 2008
This paper describes the development of a surface alerting capability based on the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) that is projected for use by many classes of aircraft and at a range of airports. The capability is intended to help reduce the risk of runway incursions and collisions.

Pose estimation in runway end safety area using geometry structure features

The Aeronautical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACTA novel image-based method is presented in this paper to estimate the poses of commercial aircrafts in a runway end safety area. Based on the fact that similar poses of an aircraft will have similar geometry structures, this method first extracts features to describe the structure of an aircraft's fuselage and aerofoil by RANdom Sample ...

Ensuring Global Runway Safety: A Look at the Future

Air and Space Law, 2011
From 24 to 26 May 2011, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) hosted a Symposium on Global Runway Safety. The objectives of the Symposium were to highlight the evolution towards a more integrated safety management approach in ICAO's runway safety programme, coordinate a global effort for improving runway safety by identifying what a ...

Runway Shoulder as Landing and Takeoff Safety Element

2012
