The pectoral fin spine (PFS) of the sturgeon is a robust dermal skeletal element that extends laterally and is located on the leading edge of the pectoral fin. The PFS is a load‐bearing dermal bone composed of peripheral parallel‐fibered bone and dermal osteonal bone organized around an interconnected neurovascular network.
