S-Nitrosylation Signaling in Cell Biology

Molecular Interventions, 2003
S-Nitrosylated proteins form when a cysteine thiol reacts with nitric oxide (NO) in the presence of an electron acceptor to form an S-NO bond. Under physiological conditions, this posttranslational modification affects the function a wide array of cell proteins, ranging from ion channels to nuclear regulatory proteins.

Enhancement of S-Nitrosylation in Glycosylated Hemoglobin

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 2000
In this study, we report a novel differential nitric oxide interaction with nonglycosylated and glycosylated hemoglobin. After in vitro incubation of hemoglobin with S-nitroso N-acetyl penicillamine (SNAP), S-nitrosoglutathione, or S-nitrosocysteine, S-nitrosylation was significantly higher in human glycosylated hemoglobin purified from diabetic ...

S-Nitrosylation in plants: Pattern and function

Journal of Proteomics, 2009
During the last two decades nitric oxide (NO) has emerged as a new chemical messenger in plant biology, which is involved in many different physiological processes, such as plant defense, transpiration and gas exchange, seed germination, and root development.

Regulation of apoptosis by protein S-nitrosylation

Amino Acids, 2006
S-nitrosylation/denitrosylation of critical cysteine residues on proteins serves as a redox switch that regulates the function of a wide array of proteins. A key signaling pathway that is regulated by S-nitrosylation is apoptotic cell death. Here we will review the proteins in apoptotic pathways that are known to be S-nitrosylated by endogenous NO ...

Identification of S‐Nitrosylated Proteins in Plants

2008
Posttranslational protein modifications affect the function or the activity of proteins and exhibit important mechanisms in regulating cellular events. A broad spectrum of modifications is known, including redox-dependent alterations. During the last decade, covalent binding of nitric oxide (NO) to protein cysteines, termed S-nitrosylation, seems ...
