Broad protective immune responses elicited by bacterium-like particle-based intranasal pneumococcal particle vaccine displaying PspA2 and PspA4 fragments

open access: yesHuman Vaccines & Immunotherapeutics, 2019
Streptococcus pneumoniae is an infectious pathogen mainly infecting host bodies through the respiratory system. An effective pneumococcal vaccine would be targeted to the mucosa and provide not only protection against invasive infection but also against ...

MULTILOCI SEQUESTERANT STRAINS OF STREPTOCOCCUS PNEUMONIAE ISOLATED FROM ELDERLY PATIENTS WITH COMMUNITY ACQUIRED PNEUMONIA

open access: yesБюллетень сибирской медицины, 2014
Comuunity-acquired pneumonias in aged patients is the significant epidemiology problem for the public health of almost all the countries. Even more important the problem of microbiological monitoring and epidemiology surveillance for the S.

Syndecan-1 Promotes Streptococcus pneumoniae Corneal Infection by Facilitating the Assembly of Adhesive Fibronectin Fibrils

open access: yesmBio, 2020
Subversion of heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) is thought to be a common virulence mechanism shared by many microbial pathogens. The prevailing assumption is that pathogens co-opt HSPGs as cell surface attachment receptors or as inhibitors of innate

Overlapping functionality of the Pht proteins in zinc homeostasis of streptococcus pneumoniae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Streptococcus pneumoniae is a globally significant pathogen that causes a range of diseases, including pneumonia, sepsis, meningitis, and otitis media. Its ability to cause disease depends upon the acquisition of nutrients from its environment, including

Ultrafast Dense Immobilization of Noble Metal Nanoparticles on Customizable Multifunctional Polymer Microspheres for Heterogeneous Catalysis and Multiplexed Biodetection

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work proposes a facile co‐assembly strategy to achieve highly uniform and dense immobilization of diverse noble metal nanoparticles onto metastable multifunctional (e.g., magnetic or fluorescent) polymer microspheres, enabling fabrication of complex hierarchical superstructures.

Epidemiology of S. pneumoniae serotypes in the Russian Federation [PDF]

open access: yesКлиническая микробиология и антимикробная химиотерапия, 2017
The prevalence of the common serotypes of S. pneumoniae in the Russian Federation was estimated in healthy carriers as well as children and adult patients with invasive and non-invasive pneumococcal infections based on the epidemiological microbiological

Bacterial Infection Elicits Heat Shock Protein 72 Release from Pleural Mesothelial Cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been implicated in infection-related processes and has been found in body fluids during infection. This study aimed to determine whether pleural mesothelial cells release HSP70 in response to bacterial infection in vitro

Structural Basis of the Membrane Association by the Conserved RocS Membrane‐Targeting Sequence in Streptococcus

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Chromosome segregation in Streptococcus pneumoniae depends on RocS, a bitopic protein whose membrane‐anchoring mechanisms were unclear. Using NMR and AFM, this study reveals that the widely conserved RocS anchor binds to membranes via a conserved kink‐helix motif which inserts into lipid nanodomains.

The diagnostic value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing for identifying Streptococcus pneumoniae in paediatric bacterial meningitis

open access: yesBMC Infectious Diseases, 2019
Background There is currently no research on the diagnostic value of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for a single pathogens in CSF.

Deletions in the neuraminidase stalk region of H2N2 and H9N2 avian influenza virus subtypes do not affect postinfluenza secondary bacterial pneumonia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We investigated the synergism between influenza virus and Streptococcus pneumoniae, particularly the role of deletions in the stalk region of the neuraminidase (NA) of H2N2 and H9N2 avian influenza viruses.
