Rapid detection of S. pyogenes and S. pneumoniae in pleural fluid for diagnosis of parapneumonic empyema

European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 2023
The aim of this study was to assess the reliability of rapid antigen detection tests (RADT) for Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) and Streptococcus pneumoniae on pleural fluid samples for diagnosis of parapneumonic effusion/empyema (PPE) and their potential for improving pathogen identification rates.

A vaccine against S. pyogenes: Design and experimental immune response

Methods, 2009
Streptococcus pyogenes causes severe invasive infections: the post-streptococcal sequelae of acute rheumatic fever (RF) and rheumatic heart disease (RHD), acute glomerulonephritis, and uncomplicated pharyngitis and pyoderma. Efforts to produce a vaccine against S. pyogenes began several decades ago, and different models have been proposed.

Incidental detection of S. pyogenes-DNA in psoriatic skin by PCR

Archives of Dermatological Research, 2005
Psoriasis vulgaris is a T cell-mediated autoimmune skin disease. First disease onset and disease worsening are often triggered by tonsillar infection with Streptococcus pyogenes. Here we demonstrate the incidental detection of S. pyogenes DNA in samples of different biological origin from patients with chronic plaque-type psoriasis by PCR.

Tetracycline and Macrolide Co-Resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes: Co-Selection As a Reason for Increase in Macrolide-Resistant S. pyogenes?

Microbial Drug Resistance, 2004
In Denmark, tetracycline resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes is frequent (>30%) whereas macrolide resistance is low (<5%). The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic background of tetracycline- and macrolide resistance in macrolide-resistant S.

Prevalence and antimicrobial-resistance of S. pneumoniae and S. pyogenes in healthy children in the region of Madrid

International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, 2002
Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus pyogenes are common agents of respiratory or ORL pathology. Pneumococcus sensitivity has progressively decreased to penicillin and other antimicrobial agents, mainly in south of Europe, but this resistance report can be erroneous by a selection bias, because they sampled only hospital cases. To determine the ...

Effect of streptolysin S from Streptococcus pyogenes on contact sensitivity in mice

Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie und Hygiene. Series A: Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Virology, Parasitology, 1986
Streptolysin S, a hemolytic toxin produced by strains of Streptococcus pyogenes, was examined for its effect on cellular immune reaction in mice. The toxin given intraperitoneally for six consecutive days did not influence intensiveness of delayed hypersensitivity to oxazolone which has been used as a model of cellular immune reaction.

Concurrent tonsillitis and pneumonia due to S. pyogenes.

La Clinica terapeutica, 2008
Tonsillitis is a common disease especially of children and young adults. The diagnosis of tonsillitis generally requires the consideration of Group A beta-hemolytic streptococci infection. Pneumonia is an inflammation of the alveoli and terminal airspaces in response to invasion by an infectious agent that is introduced into the lungs through ...

Molecular markers for discriminating Streptococcus pyogenes and S. dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis

European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 2010
Given the increasing aetiological importance of Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis in diseases which are primarily attributed to S. pyogenes, molecular markers are essential to distinguish these species and delineate their epidemiology more precisely.

Cloning of a Chromosomal Region Responsible for Streptolysin S Production in Streptococcus pyogenes

1997
S. pyogenes can cause a wide range of diseases in humans, including necrotizing fasciitis, possibly associated with cytolytic toxins. Virulence factors of group A streptococci (GAS) include several cell associated and secreted products such as the hyaluronic acid capsule8, the helical M protein, streptokinase and five streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins,

Erläutern Sie die Streptokokken, v.a. S. pyogenes!

1998
