Bio‐Inspired Synthesis of Macroporous Single Crystal Particles as Scattering Agents

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A general strategy is presented that delivers unique, single‐crystal microparticles that combine submicron macroporosity and uniform particle shapes. A bioinspired approach is used to occlude three distinct types of additives – polystyrene microspheres, polymer vesicles and amino acids – within calcite single crystals, and subsequent thermal annealing ...

The Sacrificial Economy of Luis Bunuel [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
In a 1959 interview with Jean de Baroncelli, the great Surrealist filmmaker Luis Buñuel famously declared, “I’m an atheist still, thank God” (qtd. in Kyrou 120). In fact, as anyone who has seen Buñuel’s films can attest, he is more than simply an atheist;

Li‐Ion Battery Anodes Combining Intercalation and Plating Energy Storage Mechanisms through SiOx/C Coated Graphite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A thin SiOx/C coating enables graphite to stably support Li intercalation and Li plating in a hybrid anode. Paired with an optimized localized high‐concentration electrolyte, the full cell achieves 584 mAh g−1 and 86% capacity retention after 500 cycles, highlighting a practical route toward higher‐energy lithium‐ion batteries.

Optical Signature of Moiré Superlattices Formed by Twisted SrTiO3 Membranes

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We discover optical signatures from bonded interfaces in twisted SrTiO3 moiré superlattices, including low‐frequency Raman vibrational modes and strong second‐harmonic generation, consistent with strong interlayer coupling inferred from cross‐sectional electron microscopy and ab initio calculations. ABSTRACT Moiré superlattices formed at the interfaces

Sacrificial templates for manufacturing multidimensional vasculature [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Biological systems employ complex, composite architectures that are intimately related to homeostatic functionality. A common necessity underlying many of these systems is the transport of fluids that distribute nutrients, remove waste, and provide ...

Electrospun Wood‐Derived Biopolymers as Electrodes in Electrochemical Energy Storage Technologies

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Electrospinning transforms wood‐derived cellulose and lignin into architecturally defined, binder‐free carbon electrodes with tuneable porosity and functionality. This review shows how fibre design enables decoupled charge and mass transport, enhancing performance across battery systems, while identifying key challenges in spinnability, scalability ...

Electrochemical Synthesis and Structural Characterization of a Novel Mixed-valence Copper (I)-copper (II) Complex: {[Bis(ethylenediamine) Copper (II)] Bis[diiodocuprate (I)]}

open access: yesMolecules, 2007
A novel, mixed-valent copper(I)-copper(II) complex, {[bis(ethylene-diamine)copper(II)] bis[diiodocuprate(I)]} (1), has been prepared by electrochemicaldissolution of a sacrificial copper anode in a solution of ethylenediamine (en), I2 ...
