Sagittal Otoliths of fish in Reunion Island (Indian Ocean)

open access: yes, 2023

Identification of gerreid species (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Gerreidae) from the Pacific coast of Mexico based on sagittal otolith morphology analysis [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2012
Background. Although the species of the family Gerreidae have been subjected to many studies, their taxonomy at specific- and sometimes generic levels is still confusing. To contribute to the clarification of the taxonomy of the Mexican Pacific mojarras,

Otolith shape analysis supports three cryptic species in the Stellifer punctatissimus complex (Acanthuriformes: Sciaenidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2022
Sciaenidae species (croakers and drums) are known for specializations in their sensory apparatus, such as otoliths and lateral line. Within this family, some Stelliferinae members remain taxonomically unresolved due to their cryptic aspects and low ...

Sturgeon and paddlefish (Acipenseridae) sagittal otoliths are composed of the calcium carbonate polymorphs vaterite and calcite

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2016
This study sought to resolve whether sturgeon (Acipenseridae) sagittae (otoliths) contain a non‐vaterite fraction and to quantify how large a non‐vaterite fraction is using neutron diffraction analysis. This study found that all otoliths examined had a calcite fraction that ranged from 18 ± 6 to 36 ± 3% by mass.

Biometry of the sagittal otoliths for three demersal fish species from the Eastern Adriatic Sea (Montenegro)

open access: yesActa Adriatica, 2021
The otolith morphology, biometry and otolith size and fish length relationship of three demersal fish species: red mullet Mullus barbatus, common pandora Pagellus erythrinus and hake Merluccius merluccius were examined. Based on otoliths relative sizes P. erythrinus and M. merluccius have Large otoliths, while M.

Phylogenetic and ecological duality in the otoliths of Sciaenidae

open access: yesCladistics, EarlyView.
Abstract Teleost fishes have evolved taxon‐specific otoliths that vary greatly in size and shape and are primarily involved in hearing and balance. This study identifies the main drivers of otolith shape disparity in Sciaenidae, a clade of sound‐producing bony fishes, using three‐dimensional geometric morphometrics (3DGM).

Using sagittal otoliths and eye diameter for ecological characterization of deep-sea fish: Aphanopus carbo and A. intermedius from NE Atlantic waters

open access: yesScientia Marina, 2010
The sagittal otolith and eye diameter of two sympatric species of the genus Aphanopus, A. carbo and A. intermedius, from North Atlantic waters were investigated.

Temperature and somatic growth effects on otolith growth of larval Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus (Actinopterygii: Clupeiformes: Clupeidae) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria, 2012
Background. If a link exists between somatic and otolith growth, otolith size and microstructure analysis can be a useful tool in studies of larval fish growth and condition—methods like growth back-calculation or marginal increment width ...

Comparison of direct versus radiographic measurement of sagittal otoliths in cadavers of bogue (Boops boops)

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Veterinary Research, 2012
Abstract Objective—To validate the use of radiography to determine the length of sagittal otoliths in intact bogue (Boops boops; a sparid fish [commonly called sea bream]). Sample—52 bogue cadavers. Procedures—Weight and standard lengths (from the tip of the snout to the caudal end of the last vertebra) of fish were measured.

Growth and Overfishing Indicators Applied to the Protandrous Hermaphrodite Fat Snook (Centropomus parallelus) in the South Atlantic

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The fat snook Centropomus parallelus is a protandrous hermaphrodite teleost of artisanal and recreational value in the South Atlantic, vulnerable to fishing pressure and size‐selective gears. We evaluated exploitation status using size and age based overfishing indicators from recreational fishing championships and artisanal landings along the
