Data-mining the FlyAtlas online resource to identify core functional motifs across transporting epithelia [PDF]
<p>Background Comparative analysis of tissue-specific transcriptomes is a powerful technique to uncover tissue functions. Our FlyAtlas.org provides authoritative gene expression levels for multiple tissues of Drosophila melanogaster (1).

Xerostomia, also known as dry mouth, is caused by a reduction in salivary secretion and by changes in the composition of saliva associated with the malfunction of salivary glands. Xerostomia decreases quality of life.

Innate Antimicrobial Defense of Skin and Oral Mucosa
This special issue intends to review and update our understanding of the antimicrobial defense mechanisms of the skin and oral cavity. These two environments are quite different in terms of water, pH, and nutrient availability, but have some common ...

BACKGROUND: Chronically elevated alpha-2-macroglobulin (A2MG) in the blood has been correlated with diabetes and the HbA1c profile; however, no systematic review has been conducted to evaluate the association of A2MG salivary levels and glycemia or HbA1c

Detection of Grb-2-related Adaptor Protein Gene (GRAP) and Peptide Molecule in Salivary Glands of MRL/lpr Mice and Patients with Sjögren's Syndrome [PDF]
The pathogenesis of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is poorly understood. In this study we used an in-house mouse spleen cDNA microarray to analyse genes in spleens from MRL/lpr (an SS mouse model) mice. We have previously demonstrated that GRAP genes were up-regulated in salivary glands of the same mice.

Development of antiseptic adaptation and cross-adapatation in selected oral pathogens in vitro [PDF]
There is evidence that pathogenic bacteria can adapt to antiseptics upon repeated exposure. More alarming is the concomitant increase in antibiotic resistance that has been described for some pathogens.

Synthetic peptides as a novel approach for detecting antibodies against sand fly saliva.
BACKGROUND:Hosts repeatedly bitten by sand flies develop antibodies against sand fly saliva and screening of these immunoglobulins can be employed to estimate the risk of Leishmania transmission, to indicate the feeding preferences of sand flies, or to ...
