Emigration and Survival of Hatchery‐Reared Coho Salmon Released as Parr and Smolts in a Reintroduction Program

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Releasing fish at varied life stages is an underutilized hatchery‐rearing practice. Columbia River Treaty tribes have been working to reintroduce extirpated Coho Salmon to historical habitats in upper watersheds. This effort has included the release of hatchery‐origin fish at both the parr and smolt life stages in the Yakima River Basin ...

Flow Matters: Unravelling the Interactive Influences of Flow Variation and Non‐Native Trout on Vulnerable Galaxiids

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Understanding the interactive effects of non‐native species and alterations to flow regimes is important to combat threats to freshwater communities. Low‐flow conditions may either exacerbate or offset influences of non‐natives but the mechanisms determining the direction are poorly understood.

Spatial responses of black vultures to resource pulses during white‐tailed deer hunting seasons

open access: yesWildlife Society Bulletin, EarlyView.
Pulsed resources can dramatically influence spatial ecology of wildlife. We investigated black vulture responses to resource pulses from white‐tailed deer hunting season. We found that black vulture home range size and overlap decreased with harvest intensity. Abstract Pulsed resources can dramatically influence spatial ecology of wildlife.

Simulated effects of site salinity and inundation on long-term growth trajectory and carbon sequestration in monospecific $Rhizophora\; mucronata$ plantation in the Philippines [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
A mathematical model of coastal forest growth is proposed to describe and test the effects of salinity and inundation in the long-term growth performance and carbon sequestration of monospecific mangrove ($Rhizophora\; mucronata$) plantation in the Philippines.

Behavior of Rio Sao Francisco Piranhas in Response to Changes in Space and Density

open access: yesZoo Biology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Previous observations of Rio Sao Francisco piranhas (Pygocentrus piraya) at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo revealed frequent aggressive interactions, which were associated with the injury and death of some individuals. Fishes are known to increase aggressive behavior when available space is limited.

Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Individual variation in development can strongly impact population density via its impact on demography. When this variation in development is caused by developmental plasticity, the resulting effects on population density are characterised as ‘eco‐phenotypic dynamics ...
