Here, we demonstrate that polysaccharide chain length regulation plays a distinct role in enabling formation of a cyclic molecule important for the bacterial cell surface. However, this function is necessary, but not sufficient for the cyclic molecule's biosynthesis.

FliL, a single‐pass transmembrane flagellar protein with a large periplasmic domain, associates with the basal body and supports motor function under high‐load conditions (e.g., viscous environments). The periplasmic domain of deletion mutant FliL forms a flexible ring structure, likely reflecting the capacity of the full‐length protein to adaptively ...

Design and Immunogenicity of a Nanoparticle Combination Vaccine for Salmonella in Poultry
ABSTRACT Salmonella enterica serovars (Salmonella) are common causes of bacterial gastroenteritis (salmonellosis) often associated with the consumption of poultry products. The control of Salmonella in broiler chickens is difficult because colonized birds may carry this pathogen undetected into the slaughterhouse and cause meat contamination.

ABSTRACT Introduction Nontyphoidal Salmonella enterica (NTS) is a major zoonotic enteric pathogen. Animal contact‐related NTS outbreaks have increased in the United States over the last decade. Geospatial analysis can identify locations with elevated risk of NTS outbreaks where public health authorities can focus their NTS prevention and intervention ...

The ageing holobiont: crosstalk between telomere dynamics, oxidative stress and the gut microbiome
ABSTRACT The gut tissue is at the frontline of early onset of ageing. It exhibits high cell turnover rates and rapid telomere shortening, which can have systemic effects on the developing or senescing organism. We conducted a literature review of studies on the crosstalk between telomere length dynamics, telomerase activity, oxidative stress, and gut ...

Emergence of cephalosporin-resistant strains of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is a cause of concern in the management of enteric fever. Cephalosporin resistance in Salmonella species is mainly due to the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases ...

Deep Mutational Scanning for the Study and Engineering of Protein Assemblies
This review explores how deep mutational scanning (DMS) can be used to improve understanding and accelerate engineering of protein assemblies, from natural fibers to engineered nanocages. We discuss various types of protein assemblies and their characterization, provide an introduction to the DMS technique, and then highlight examples in which DMS has ...
