Processes Controlling Formation of Salt Efflorescence in Coastal Salt Flats

open access: yesWater Resources Research, 2023
AbstractSalt flats are bare soil surfaces with elevated salinity levels which inhibit vegetation. They are commonly found in areas of coastal wetlands where salt in surface soil accumulates due to evaporation from the shallow saline water table. The expansion of these vegetation‐free zones may severely affect the bio‐ecological function of these ...

Recovery of actinides from actinide-aluminium alloys by chlorination: Part I [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Pyrochemical processes in molten LiCl–KCl are being developed in ITU for recovery of actinides from spent nuclear fuel. The fuel is anodically dissolved to the molten salt electrolyte and actinides are electrochemically reduced on solid aluminium ...

Cell wall target fragment discovery using a low‐cost, minimal fragment library

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
LoCoFrag100 is a fragment library made up of 100 different compounds. Similarity between the fragments is minimized and 10 different fragments are mixed into a single cocktail, which is soaked to protein crystals. These crystals are analysed by X‐ray crystallography, revealing the binding modes of the bound fragment ligands.

The shrinkage behavior of boreholes drilled through deepwater creeping salt formations in West Africa

open access: yesFrontiers in Energy Research
Introduction: Salt formations are complex and pose significant risks during oil and gas drilling. Creep behavior in salt formations under geostress can jeopardize drilling safety. Methods: This study analyzes the shrinkage behavior of boreholes drilled ...

First Principles Study of the Ignition Mechanism for Hypergolic Bipropellants: N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethylmethylenediamine (TMMDA) with Nitric Acid [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We report quantum mechanics calculations (B3LYP flavor of density functional theory) to determine the chemical reaction mechanism underlying the hypergolic reaction of pure HNO_3 with N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylethylenediamine (TMEDA) and N,N,N′,N ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tuning structural isomers of phenylenediammonium to afford efficient and stable perovskite solar cells and modules

open access: yesNature Communications, 2021
Salt passivation of perovskite often results in formation of 2D perovskite layers, which impaired charge transport behaviour. Here, the authors study the energy barrier of 2D perovskite formation upon passivation by different iodide salt, and provide ...

Improved alkaline electrochemical cell [PDF]

open access: yes, 1970
Addition of lead ions to electrolyte suppresses zinc dendrite formation during charging cycle. A soluble lead salt can be added directly or metallic lead can be incorporated in the zinc electrode and allowed to dissolve into the ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...
