Formation and Rupture of Ca$^{2+}$ Induced Pectin Biopolymer Gels

open access: yes, 2014
When calcium salts are added to an aqueous solution of polysaccharide pectin, ionic cross-links form between pectin chains, giving rise to a gel network in dilute solution. In this work, dynamic light scattering (DLS) is employed to study the microscopic

Equilibrium properties of charged microgels: a Poisson-Boltzmann-Flory approach [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The equilibrium properties of ionic microgels are investigated using a combination of the Poisson-Boltzmann and Flory theories. Swelling behavior, density profiles, and effective charges are all calculated in a self-consistent way.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Effects of environmental actions, recycled aggregate quality and modification treatments on durability performance of recycled concrete

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2020
The durability performance of recycled concrete (RC) subjected to different environmental actions, including salt-solution, mechanical load, salt-solution freeze-thaw cycles, and coupled mechanical load and salt-solution freeze-thaw cycles was ...

A Neutral Polyampholyte in an ionic solution

open access: yes, 1996
The behavior of a neutral polyampholyte ($PA$) chain with $N$ monomers, in an ionic solution, is analyzed in the framework of the full Debye-H$\ddot u $ckel-Bjerrum-Flory $(DHBjF)$ theory.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Effect of Soaking Treatments in Acid and Salt Solutions on Physicochemical, Structural, Thermal and Rheological Properties of Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) Flour

open access: yesFood Technology and Biotechnology
Research background. Porang (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) contains a high amount of starch, glucomannan and Ca-oxalate. Soaking porang tuber in acid (citric acid) and salt (sodium chloride) solutions affects the Ca-oxalate content, functional ...

Salt Spray and Surfactants Induced Morphological, Physiological, and Biochemical Responses in Callistemon citrinus (Curtis) Plants

open access: yesHorticulturae, 2022
The growth and aesthetic value of ornamental plant species used near coastlines are negatively influenced by salt spray. The presence of surfactants could enhance salt damage.

Charge Fluctuation Forces Between Stiff Polyelectrolytes in Salt Solution: Pairwise Summability Re-examined

open access: yes, 1997
We formulate low-frequency charge-fluctuation forces between charged cylinders - parallel or skewed - in salt solution: forces from dipolar van der Waals fluctuations and those from the correlated monopolar fluctuations of mobile ions.
