Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Investigation on Co-Cr micro-strips for VBLM [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Hard magnetic strips can be used for bit stabilization in a VBLM. For this stabilization the magnetic strayfield of the strips induce potential wells for the bits.

Comparison of the Nickel Titanium Alloy Archwires’ Dimensions with the Mean Arch Dimensions of a Turkish Sample

open access: yesMeandros Medical and Dental Journal, 2022
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the harmony between the mandibular arch dimensions of a Turkish sample that has Class I occlusion without orthodontic treatment history and the arch dimensions of archwires produced by different manufacturers.

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Three-Dimensional (3D) Printed Microneedles for Microencapsulated Cell Extrusion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Cell-hydrogel based therapies offer great promise for wound healing. The specific aim of this study was to assess the viability of human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells immobilized in atomized alginate capsules (3.5% (w/v) alginate, d = 225 µm ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Sampling-based dimension reduction for subspace approximation [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the thirty-ninth annual ACM symposium on Theory of computing, 2007
We give a randomized bi-criteria algorithm for the problem of finding a k-dimensional subspace that minimizesthe Lp-error for given points, i.e., p-th root of the sum of p-th powers of distances to given points, for any p ≥ 1. Our algorithm runs in time O (mn · pk3 (k/e)2p) andproduces a subset of size O (pk2 (k/e)2p) from the given points such that ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Monotonicity and error bounds for networks of Erlang loss queues [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Networks of Erlang loss queues naturally arise when modelling finite communication systems without delays, among which, most notably\ud (i) classical circuit switch telephone networks (loss networks) and\ud (ii) present-day wireless mobile networks.\ud ...
