This retrospective study identified low preoperative psoas muscle volume, measured by computed tomography, as an independent predictor of postoperative complications in patients undergoing emergency surgery for strangulated small bowel obstruction. Low psoas muscle volume, particularly in older adults, was associated with cardiopulmonary and systemic ...

Oxytocin is an age-specific circulating hormone that is necessary for muscle maintenance and regeneration. [PDF]
The regenerative capacity of skeletal muscle declines with age. Previous studies suggest that this process can be reversed by exposure to young circulation; however, systemic age-specific factors responsible for this phenomenon are largely unknown.

This study investigates the prognostic utility of a novel volumetric indicator—psoas volume index (PVI)—for assessing sarcopenia in elderly rectal cancer patients. Sarcopenia classified by our proposed PVI cut‐off values was associated with poor nutritional and inflammatory status, and patients with low PVI showed significantly worse long‐term outcomes.

Use machine learning to help identify possible sarcopenia cases in maintenance hemodialysis patients
Background Maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) patients often suffer from sarcopenia, which is strongly associated with their long-term mortality. The diagnosis and treatment of sarcopenia, especially possible sarcopenia for MHD patients are of great ...

Changes in sarcopenia and incident cardiovascular disease in prospective cohorts
Background Previous studies have identified sarcopenia as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, these studies primarily focused on sarcopenia status at baseline, without considering changes in sarcopenia status during ...

Body composition, IGF1 status, and physical functionality in nonagenarians: implications for osteosarcopenia [PDF]
OBJECTIVES: Body composition alterations occur during aging. The purpose of the present analysis was to explore the functional consequences of the overlap of sarcopenia and osteoporosis, and the potential role of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) in ...
