Isometric training at longer muscle–tendon complex lengths: A potential countermeasure to impaired neuro‐muscle–tendon function during space travel

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 111, Issue 9, Page 4041-4053, 1 September 2026.
Abstract Manned space exploration to distant destinations, including Mars, continues to be an aspiration of humankind. Space travel does, however, present many challenges to the body, amongst which adaptation to microgravity is perhaps the largest. For instance, both short and long manned spaceflight missions have shown substantial deleterious effects ...

Integrative simulation analysis of myocardial ischaemia–reperfusion injury

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, Volume 604, Issue 18, Page 7640-7662, 15 September 2026.
Abstract figure legend A comprehensive mathematical model of ventricular myocyte was developed to gain insights into the mechanisms underlying cardiac ischaemia–reperfusion injury. The model integrates excitation–contraction (E–C) coupling, cytosolic and mitochondrial pH regulation, pH dependence of major E–C coupling components and cellular energy ...

Ca2+ and the sarcoplasmic reticulum

Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, 1984
The role of the sarcoplasmic reticulum in the regulation of cytosolic calcium is briefly reviewed. A method is described for monitoring calcium efflux from relatively large amounts of SR in a newly designed filtration apparatus using membrane filtration.

Sarcoplasmic reticulum V. The structure of sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1968
Electron microscope analysis of skeletal muscle microsomes was carried out by negative staining with potassium phosphotungstate. The size and shape of microsomes are influenced by species differences, the conditions of preparation and storage. The outer surface of the microsomal membrane is covered by subunits of 40 A diameter, with center to center ...

The Interaction of Drugs with the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum

Annual Review of Pharmacology and Toxicology, 1982
Efforts to determine the mechanisms by which drugs interact with membranes can be facilitated by studies of the SR, which has a relatively simple structure. The fact that the SR lacks most of the specific receptors found on other membranes, notably the sarcolemma, is an advantage, as well as a limitation, in that "nonspecific" drug effects can be ...

Studies of solubilized sarcoplasmic reticulum

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1970
Abstract The non-ionic detergent Triton X-100 solubilizes most of the protein and phospholipid from the sarcoplasmic reticulum of rabbit skeletal muscle. The calcium dependent ATPase of the sarcoplasmic reticulum is found in the soluble fraction whereas the basic ATPase activity remains insoluble in Triton X-100.

Fractionation of solubilized sarcoplasmic reticulum?

Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, 1971
Summary A method has been developed which permits the separation of three protein components of the fragmented sarcoplasmic reticular membrane following solubilization with Triton X-100. One fraction contains a 100,000 dalton component and constitutes about 20–30% of the total membrane protein; in this fraction the level of ATPase activity and ...

Phosphorylation of the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum and Sarcolemma

Annual Review of Physiology, 1982
The ,a-adrenergic actions of catecholamines represent a key control mecha nism that regulates the metabolic, electrical, and mechanical performance of the myocardium. Cyclic AMP( cAMP) serves as the intracellular second messenger for these regulatory processes in that ,a-adrenergic activation of a sarcolemmal adenylate cyclase causes intracellular ...

ATP synthesis in sarcoplasmic reticulum

Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics, 1972
Abstract Previous studies have reported that ATP is synthesized from ADP and P i in systems containing calcium phosphate-loaded sarcoplasmic reticulum membranes. We have repeated and confirmed this work in preparations from lobster tail muscle in which the only energy source was a calcium concentration gradient.
