Growth trajectories of individual larvae of Japanese sardine, Sardinops melanostictus, caught in the coastal waters off western Japan were back-calculated from the first feeding stage up to date of capture (approximate size of 20 to 35 mm total length; TL) based on individually determined allometric relationships between otolith daily ring radii and ...

Population decline off the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus owing to recruitment failures
Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 1995The Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus started to decline after 1989. Recruitment to age 1 population was small in four year-classes from 1988 to 1991. The population decline after 1989 resulted from recruitment failures in 4 consecutive years. Egg production was high in the years of poor recruitment.

Spotlined sardine Sardinops melanostictus listensto 1-kHz sound by using its gas bladder
Fisheries Science, 2003: The auditory characteristics of pelagic fish have received lessattention compared to those of benthic or freshwater fish species, even though underwater sounds are considered to affect their behavior.Audiograms of five spotlined sardines were obtained using the auditorybrainstem response technique in which the evoked potential on theskin covering the

Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data collected during routine monitoring surveys of the distribution and abundance of Japanese sardine larvae (Sardinops melanostictus) off the Pacific coast of Japan in February 1993 and 1994 were used to construct stationary average flowfields for three levels in the upper 100 m in each year.

Historical data for the period 1929−2011 were used to generalize information on the seasonal feeding migrations of Pacific sardine to the shores of Sakhalin Island. In the 20th century, the cyclicity of sardine occurrence in the Tatar Strait and southwestern part of the Sea of Okhotsk appeared to have a similar character.

The aim of this study was to discuss a common concept of population dynamics applicable to both Thrips imaginis (Thysanoptera) and the Pacific stock of the Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus). First, I elucidate the mechanism that produces the false density-dependent effect on population changes of Thrips imaginis, I conducted simple ...
