«Wrong fish» or wrong hypotheses: what happens to nekton of the Pacific waters at Kuril Islands?

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2021
A phenomenon of undulating fluctuations of nekton abundance in the Kuroshio system is discussed on example of japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus, as the most abundant and the most fluctuating species.

Effects of formalin preservation on egg size of small pelagic fish as major target species in ichthyoplankton surveys

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, 2022
Preservation is critical for egg and larval samples from ichthyoplankton surveys. As growing interest is directed toward maternal effects on egg quality, historical collections of egg samples in formalin are potentially invaluable materials but concerns ...

Environmental DNA in the Kuroshio reveals environment-dependent distribution of economically important small pelagic fish

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
IntroductionSmall pelagic fishes constitute large proportions of fisheries and are important components linking lower and higher trophic levels in marine ecosystems.

Feeding and trophic relations of mass fish species in the Kuril waters of the Pacific Ocean

open access: yesИзвестия ТИНРО, 2017
Feeding conditions of the main commercial fish species are assessed and their feeding relationships are considered on the materials collected aboard RV Professor Levanidov and RV TINRO in the Pacific waters at Kuril Islands in July-August of 2015 and ...

Investigation of inter-annual variation in the feeding habits of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) and mackerels (Scomber spp.) in the Western North Pacific based on bulk and amino acid stable isotopes

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2023
Inter-annual variation in the feeding habits and food sources of Japanese sardine and mackerel at age-0 and age-1+ caught in the Kuroshio-Oyashio transition zone of the Western North Pacific were investigated based on analyses of bulk stable isotopes ...

Fluctuation of Reproduction and Stock Management of the Japanese Sardine (Sardinops melanostictus).

open access: yesNIPPON SUISAN GAKKAISHI, 1992
Using the yearly egg production and catch of the Japanese sardine in the period 1951-87, including periods of low stock level, increasing stock level, and high stock level, the annual change in the reproduction index was calculated. The effect of fishing on the recruitment of the Japanese sardine was evaluated.

Changes of Components in Salt-Fermented Sardine, Sardinops melanostictus Sauce during Fermentation [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, 2002
To investigate changes of components in salt-fermented sardine, Sardinops melanostictus sauce during 18 months fermentation, various chemical properties were examined at 23 months intervals. The degree of hydrolysis increased sharply until 5 months of fermentation and showed the gentle increasement after that.

A New Concept of the Stock-Recruitment Relationship for the Japanese Sardine, Sardinops Melanostictus [PDF]

open access: yesThe Open Fish Science Journal, 2012
The aim of this paper is to discuss the validity of the results of Wada and Jacobson (Can. J. Fish. Aquat. Sci. 55, 1998) and to propose a new concept of the stock-recruitment relationship for the Japanese sardine. Two regression analyses were used: simple regression and Deming regression.

The Staircase Chart: Visualising Vertical and Cross‐Shelf Movements and Dispersal of Early‐Life Fish, Applied to Japanese Jack Mackerel

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Dispersal during early life stages is a critical process shaping marine fish connectivity and population dynamics, yet direct field observations at the individual level remain elusive. This has limited our understanding of the factors controlling dispersal, including the impact of active swimming by larvae and juveniles. Here, we present a new

Advancing Ecological Understanding and Sustainable Management of Small Pelagic Fish

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 27, Issue 4, Page 850-864, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Small pelagic fish (SPF) are critical to the trophodynamic structure and function of marine systems and support some of the most valuable and socially important fisheries worldwide. Their “boom and bust” population dynamics, shifts in distribution, and importance as forage resources for other fish stocks place unique challenges to assessing ...
