Some Aspects of Effective Stress in Saturated and Partly Saturated Soils

Géotechnique, 1963
Synopsis The meaning of the principle of effective stress and the equations used to express it for both saturated and partly saturated soils are re-examined. The importance of stress path in both cases is apparent, and ways of plotting the results of tests on partly saturated samples are presented which take this into account.

Thermodynamics of saturated and unsaturated soils

2020
An understanding of the behaviour of saturated/unsaturated soils is important for the design and analysis of geostructures. In this paper a continuum approach based on a structured thermodynamic theory of mixtures developed by Svendsen & Hutter (1995), in which the constituent volume densities play the role of internal variables, is applied to the ...

A Mechanical Description of Saturated Soils

1986
Homogenization methods using change of scale by spatial convolution provide a useful framework for a mechanical description of complex heterogeneous media such as saturated soils. The principle is recalled and general balance equations in Eulerian form are established for each constituent of a multiphase medium by starting from the corresponding ...
